Why would we need anything else legal than pistols and shotguns? Hobby is the only thing I can think of, but then again being a serial killer can be a hobby.

I don't need to check threads. I read the title and the poll and I saw where it was placed. In your own words, you admit it is specifically North American. It is not a general matter. Why is that so hard for you to accept?

Do you hunt? Can your get close enough to an elk, coyote, etc to shoot them with a pistol?
A bear? Do you really want to?

Sorry, I misunderstood your post.
In general game is shot with a matching riffle as in the end relevant killing power.
Of course there are exceptions like killing an ice bear with a .22.

However, since people love 'em, and the US seem clueless as to how to manage the problem... here is my two cents worth of advice.
- Restrict the buying and use of high powered weapons, and automatic weapons to only military, and special forces. Shotguns, as well.
- Hunters are only allowed a rifle.
- Home owners who want a gun get a hand gun, a rifle.
- No one younger than 21 allowed access to a gun, period.
- All must have a license to carry, own, and use any gun... including toy guns.

There are just a number of problems.
- People will still get hold of weapons they should not possess, because there is corruption within the places responsible for maintaining order.
- People will complain that they need more than a "pea" shooter to protect their family, or hunt big game.
- Congress has to agree, and there is no unanimity within this system.
So... I don't know. Maybe scientists will build a big gun in space that shoots electrical waves to the brain that changes their thinking. Then everyone will only want paper guns.
The only other thing is for everyone to submit to God's kingdom, where we beat our swords into plow shears, and our spears into pruning shears, and learn war no more, but since that wont happen..
There is only one solution left.

Which one of those would you use to shoot an elk at say..100 yards

It's possible to hunt those with a shotgun, as I'm sure you're well aware. A rifle is not needed, it's just more convenient. If you're not feeling the shotgun, feel free to use a bow and arrow.

I'm guessing you aren't any avid hunter.
Example... Shoot a bear with a shot gun and you just make it mad(unless you are a foot from it. Which I don't want to be)
