hands up if you think cars are disgusting things

It's cold where I am right now and the exhaust fumes of cars are clearly visible in the crisp winter's air

I've seen loads of cars, all releasing fumes into the atmosphere.... the same atmosphere that everyone has to breath in order to keep living

I think this is utterly disgusting, it is totally anti-social

The sooner petrol fuelled cars are replaced by electric ones the better and by "car" I mean all motor vehicles

I think cars as we know them today are disgusting

It is even worse than not cleaning up after your dog and more harmful than fly-tipping

Hands up if you think cars are disgusting and anti-social

I most certainly do
Cars unfortunately are engraved in our psyche, no government dare upset the driver.
Dare to propose a 'clean air zone' and you'll lose a by-election.

Cars are necessary in many rural areas, but they would be less necessary if public transport hadn't been run down.
My wife is going away tomorrow and taking our only car. I live in the suburbs and can easily manage without a car.
But I have friends who live about 8-miles away and they have one bus a day, so they have two cars and need them.

Electric cars will help the pollution but are not the answer.
Better, cheaper (free?) public transport is the answer.

I live in a rural area and cars are a necessity here and in much of the US. The only place where they are not are in urban areas where public transportation is available.
That's no excuse.
Drive your tractor.
They look like fun!

I'd ride my bike more but it's too dangerous to be hit by traffic.

They will never put in the proper infrastructure needed for safe alternative transportation.
I understand. I'm even afraid to walk on the sidewalk and cross the street because of how crazy people drive here. They're always trying to rush you across the street, like they're in a huge hurry. They'll run you over on the sidewalk, even! The funny thing is when they get all offended when you cuss at them or flip them off for attempting to kill you. Ohioians are something else and it ain't good.

I am speaking of big city life, and in big cities the grocery store it's downstairs.
There are grocery stores anywhere...in every street.
So you really need no car.

That’s one thing that I appreciate about the city where I live: every street or every other street has a small grocery store. There are also nice convenience stores everywhere. If I ever need anything, I can walk a really short distance to a grocery store or to GS25 or 7-Eleven. My friends in the US think it’s unideal that I don’t have a car here, but I absolutely don’t need one. If I have to travel a longer distance and don’t feel like walking, I can order a taxi and it’ll arrive in five minutes or less.

Yes those lithium discarded batteries are going to make epically beautiful toxic mountain landfills someday.

A future sight to behold.
The lithium in them is worth too much. They will be recycle.

What is amazing is how you cannot even keep your complaints straight. In the next post you are likely to complain about how much a replacement battery will cost. How do you not see that you are contradicting yourself?

You might as well complain about the mountains of catalytic converters.

The biggest reason I dislike cars is the roadkill and how that's viewed as acceptable. It sickens me that bloody, gory smashed animal corpses strewn on the road and sidewalk is accepted as normal. The callousness of modern society is disturbing. I feel the same about skyscrapers that birds fly into and break their necks.

I also hate how most American cities privilege cars over walking, biking and public transportation. It just leads to more accidents, more congestion and makes it far more difficult to get anywhere. I believe you shouldn't have to have a car if you live in a city.
I found roadkill to be very useful at times. I use to take a road trip from Washington to Minnesota and back. All of the roadkill that I saw in Montana sure helped me keep my eyes open at nights.

Someone hit my cat, and left a note on Nextdoor(a neighbor showed us); "sorry! I didn't have time to stop and help!"

The death of my feline friend was an accident, I could have forgiven it. I've tragically hit a squirrel; sometimes you can't avoid it. I couldn't forgive the attitude, though.

If I had hit her grandmother crossing the road, the same answer would not have been acceptable.
Okay, not you, but I have heard of extremely strong reactions of some people when a pet has died. Some sources recommend that one should not contact the owners directly. If your grandma was hit the police would have been involved too. That can protect people from the crazies. They won't show up for cat deaths, sad to say.

I love working on cars. Keeping them running for a long time to keep from having to make more. It is fun to troubleshoot and tinker with cars.

It is impossible to convert all cars to electric. Do some high level math. Peak car sales in the US was 16M in 2016, there are 278M registered cars in the US, that means it would take 18 years if everyone bought an EV when they bought a car. Of course this is not a possibility, not everyone is going to buy a car so we are looking at probably 40 years to replace all the ICE cars. Also, I am never buying an EV due to the dangers.

Also,
Where will the power come from?
How do we make the equipment to make the power?
How do we deal with the environmental disaster that are EV fires?
How de we dispose of batteries?

The batteries will be recycled. The lithium in them is valuable. And no one is forcing people to give up gas powered cars yet. Though sooner or later gas will not be as underpriced as it is today. When a majority of people own electric cars the opposition to raising gas taxes to help pay for the problems that they create will face less and less opposition.

And yes, gas cars are neat. There is no need to trash them yet. Keep them running, work on them. And even when we are almost all electric there will be some gas cars toodling along the road on weekends. Many of them are works of art.

Electric is the car of the future. I would suggest that when their numbers get one that you but a used one and figure out how to give that the TLC needed to keep it going a bit longer.

They are. Put a front end loader on that and it is very close the the Ford Jubilee that I grew up with. I know, not a Jubilee, but definitely faster on the driveway than walking. And with a half mile long driveway that makes a difference.

The Federal government is discussing a grant for an electric high speed (150 mph up to 186 mph) light rail between Las Vegas and the greater Los Angeles area:

People love cars because they provide a very real experience of power, control, and autonomy in their lives. And I love having that experience, too.

People are not wedded to the idea that their cars must be powered by any specific fuel, however. So we can change that aspect of our individual mechanical transport vehicles. Unfortunately, that's difficult to do when greed controls nearly every decision we make as a society and certainly as a government.

The problem is not the cars, ultimately; or even our love of cars. It's greed. It's the sad fact that we live in a culture that is totally controlled by greed, rather then by common sense, common well-being, or even common self-preservation.

That's true.

A friend just lost her license(due to a seizure disorder), and has stated how much control over her own life she just lost. She has to change her schedule at work to times when there's a bus available, or there will be friends or family available to ferry her(the bus system is not great in our city). Being unable to cover the 6am shift may impact her income as well. Now she has to meticulously plan what items she needs, because she can't just zip out and buy more(the nearest store is about 3 miles away; a big deal in a cold wintery area).

We need to tax EV owners for road repair. Right now only gas powered owners are paying the gasoline taxes that in part go to infrastructure yet they are using the infrastructure.

Can you tell me where we will get the power to charge all these new EV's?
