There's a fairly common misconception that the purpose of peer-review is to seek conformity, whereas it is in reality the opposite. What it does is to allow other scientists to check out the evidence presented and then allow them to throw in their own evidence and two cents.

Thus, to put out the evidence and analysis of just one person, or even one group, as if it were a slam-dunk fact is really missing what the purpose of the process really is.

Exactly. I have become aware of this process personally as our grandson is finishing his PHD.

The Government's technology advisory body last year called for ministers to fast-track the existing 2040 ban to 2035 - and then banish privately-owned vehicles from the road entirely.

Will banning hybrids as well as petrol and diesel from 2035 work? | This is Money

There is some common sense being talked in the comments section.

Are you prepared to stop driving to save the planet?

Technology committee wants new petrol and diesel car banned by 2035 | This is Money

Will everyone be banned from owning a car or will members of the establishment and the elite be exempted?

Who says that you have to stop driving? I see a lot more promise in electrical cars than in internal combustion powered vehicles in the future.

Yes. I would miss it, but compared to polluting the environment it seems a small sacrifice. Of course, if we continue to make strides technologically we might not have to. It would help if anti-environmentalists would stop getting in the way.

Same as above. I could foresee people being able to own gasoline fueled cars so that classics can still be enjoyed, as long as the primary source of transport is less harmful.

we could still have NASCAR and monster truck rallies. Or the fine arts as I like to call them.

At least the UK government’s announcement has started the conversation.

The Government's ban on petrol & diesel cars is just a giant leap in the dark

We will see how it stands up to scrutiny.

The Government is hopping on a bandwagon without considering the consequences, like Labour 20 years ago when it urged everyone to buy diesels.

Meanwhile councils are already brainlessly instigating city centre bans or fines on all but the tiny number of zero-emission vehicles currently on the road.

Who can blame motorists for being confused and angry? Many will happily drive more eco-friendly cars once they are viable and affordable.

This is what happens when you have an audience with the High Priest of Climate Change.

It is the opposition that appears to be brainless. As technology improves what was good enough becomes not enough. That is the way of progress. You may have liked your old 2G phone. But for the phone companies those are not worth supporting any more. New technology replaces poorer old technology.

Having watched this, it does make one wonder if western governments take expert advice before jumping on the climate change bandwagon.

Has no one informed them that fossil fuels are the best solar batteries we have?

It seems that I made the right choice when I bought a Mazda SkyActiv.

Batteries are can be recharged, so um . . . no.

Are we supposed to recharge them overnight using solar power or hope that the wind blows so that we can get work the following morning?

It looks like the wheels are coming off already.
Off of your poor argument? They were not even on in the first place. There are quite a few ways to store solar power. I will let you think about it. I will even give you a clue to the number one way if you ask.

I think that is incorrect.
Sales of all IC cars will cease in 2035 but if you already have one then you can continue to use it. Of course road tax will be high for such vehicles.
