Have the Canadians gone completely insane? Gun paranoia in full force.

I was gracious enough on this thread to agree with the idea that perhaps, PERHAPS, this event with the dad getting arrested is an anomaly and therefore newsworthy, rather than the status quo north of us.

Is it? Or is this sort of attitude and event rather typical?

It's very atypical. I've never heard of an event like it ever happening in Canada.

Hey, what do you think about the generalizations about Texas on the other thread? Will you be as generous toward that state as you are inclined to be toward Canada?

I didn't make any generalizations about Texas in that thread. I only responded to specific points that you and others raised.

If so, that's strange that this drawing would have evoked such a hardcore response. Especially coupled with the explanation: Fighting bad guys with a gun is a pretty common cartoon/movie theme.

Canadian law treats long guns and handguns very differently. Getting a firearms acquisition certificate for rifles and shotguns is fairly routine. It's more involved than the US, but if you get the right courses, fill in the right forms and pass the background checks, you can get a licence that will allow you to acquire and posess weapons like shotguns and rifles.

That kind of licence doesn't allow you to get handguns. For that, you need a special licence for "restricted" weapons, which is much more onerous to get, and you need to provide specific justification for why you need the weapon. In general, it's virtually unheard of for anyone other than a police officer or armoured car personnel to be licenced to carry (edit: or even posess) a handgun.
