Why is honesty good?
Is it because a God told us not to lie?
Or are their real benefits in being honest.

Should we always try to be honest?
Are their times when being honest is bad?​

Honesty is desired or approved of when people want it.
Honesty is unpleasant or unwelcome when when people don't want it.
There are real benefits to being honest. Honesty leads to trust and trust is beneficial.

Yes .. that is the crux of the matter.

It is highly undesirable to lie, except in exceptional circumstances.
eg. war and maybe trivia, in order not to hurt people's feelings

Just don't say her bum keeps the rain off her feet. That's the function of the belly (in my case anyway).
