How does everybody like the new look?

I'm pissed as hell (and I did not bother to look at the earlier pages). There was ZERO notice of the change so it was like a dumptruck of dung dumped on our heads. Much is missing. My name etc is missing from the image but appears to come up randomly. The new threads listing is gone. The tracking of new posts in followed threads is gone. The email issue was not fixed because I guess it does not matter to the owners that some functionality is missing - only that they can dump a new look on our heads and think they're doing something good for us.

I find the left margin focus distracting, the highlighting of text almost useless, the lack of new threads listing inexcusable and especially the lack of warning an insult. It's too much to hope that people are not patting themselves on the back for this utterly botched abomination.

I have no idea what is broken and really don't care one ****ing bit to try to experiment in the dung heap because I have no confidence that broken things will be fixed and missing features restored based on the abominable track record for email.

I spent time today on on reddit, mastodon, taking a walk and reading a book - all good uses of my time.

I do enjoy posting on RF so maybe things will get better. I'm not willing to give up quite yet but I'm half way there now.

The software update was necessary, and it has been looming for months. For example:

As for the rest of your objections, this should be a relevant read:

The update is still ongoing and in its initial stage. What you see now is neither permanent nor finalized.

The email issue was not fixed because I guess it does not matter to the owners that some functionality is missing - only that they can dump a new look on our heads and think they're doing something good for us.

The email issue needs further work, and it was one of the main reasons the update was necessary. Now that the software has been updated, fixing the email issue should be doable.

By the way, the software update has required a significant amount of effort so far. The owners didn't choose to do this to "dump a new look" on anyone; the forum would have died without the update. Many members and staff members felt noticeable deterioration in the functionality and performance of the forum prior to the update.

I find the left margin focus distracting, the highlighting of text almost useless, the lack of new threads listing inexcusable and especially the lack of warning an insult. It's too much to hope that people are not patting themselves on the back for this utterly botched abomination.

If you would like to offer feedback that could be helpful during this (ongoing) update, you can do so here:

As I said, the update was unavoidable. I'm not sure what kind of warning you expected or what it would have changed considering that the update was inevitable either way, but it was long overdue, and the thread I linked above demonstrates that the update was mentioned about two months ago. An update without a "warning" is much better than the death of the forum without a warning.

I suggest taking some time to calm down before posting such things. I know from your other posts that you know better than that. Insulting people or making accusations about them just for doing their job is not a helpful way to proceed here.

We are in the midst of an extensive system upgrade that has caused significant disruptions to the forum, which is incredibly frustrating. We are working hard to reconstruct various system components, we were unable to transfer all add-ons and designs due to a lack of support and compatibility with the new version.

Let me emphasize that this upgrade was absolutely necessary to fix the ongoing email issue that has been causing problems for the forum for some time. The previous software version was a decade out of date and unsupported, and the update was massive and had to be deployed quickly.

It's important to understand that the alternative to updating was to shut down the forum altogether. We believed that updating was the best option, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We are working tirelessly to put everything back in place and improve the situation as soon as possible.

While we understand that some features may be missing or broken during this transitional period, please know that we are working on a priority basis to fix them. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this challenging time.

I have made use of the profile banner feature and set mine to something completely unpredictable and shocking!
Didn't even know this was an option until I moused over your username and saw it. I set mine up as well. It happens to be the background image on my laptop, tablet, and phone.

I was looking to change my custom title in my account details earlier today when I noticed the new profile cover option. I think I changed it at least five or six times before I finally settled on a cover that I liked the most.

I see that your banner is as shocking and unpredictable as mine!

I wanted to say that I understand your frustration, sun rise, because I was quite upset myself when I first logged in earlier today and saw that everything on the forum had changed. I'm not sure about you, but I dislike abrupt changes, whether I'm aware of them or not. In fact, unexpected changes and surprises upset me and send my mind into a tailspin. To be honest, it took me the better part of the day to get used to the changes, but I'm feeling a little better about the update now. I'm saying this to you, my friend, because I hope you'll eventually be able to adjust to the new changes as well. I'd rather deal with a new update than have the whole forum completely shut down. I've grown accustomed to RF and enjoy my time here, and I don't want to lose it.

Yes, this amount of change also isn't something I would prefer if I could pick between it and sticking to the old forum look and layout, but unfortunately, the latter wasn't an option. Right now I'm just hoping the addition of features, as well as the modifications to functions like ratings, brings the forum closer to familiarity for most of us, frequent users of the site.

I have been a member here since 2011 and a staff member since 2012. We had to change the software back in 2014 too, and that caused understandable frustration for some members—especially because of the loss of frubal comments (which were short, private messages given along with a positive rating for a post). But the most important part of this forum and its most valuable asset has always been the community, and we're still the same people regardless of the software we use to communicate.

I haven't regretted a moment I have spent working to maintain this forum over the last 11 years, and I will gladly continue to do so now by gathering feedback on the software change and doing all I can to help give members the experience they would most like to have here.

One thing I don't like is that I am seeing a shorter New Topics list (only 5 items). I relied on this feature to show me what I haven't seen yet.
In fact the situation is more a step backwards than I thought in the above comments. The five items seem to be the five most recent postings on any thread. What I like was the old system that showed a list of the newest threads created. That is how I knew which threads I wanted to comment on.

Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm here for the content, not the look. As long as it doesn't make it so hard that an old computer illiterate guy like me can't function with it. I'm good. Next time use some silly font with rainbow colours, and I'm good.

We are aware of the issue and currently working on a solution. As part of this process, we will be rebuilding all the displays, including the lists and where they pull information from. Please note that this is not the final version and there will be many changes to come.

Our current focus is to stabilize and simplify the forum before making any major changes with add-ons, themes, design, etc. We are working on a priority basis, ensuring that the most critical tasks are completed first before moving on to the next stage. Once we reach a stable and basic stage, we will perform a backup before proceeding with any further changes.

This phase is not a step backwards, but rather a transitional phase that allows us to maintain, support, update, and improve the forum. We understand that changes can be frustrating, but we assure you that our goal is to make the forum better than ever before. We appreciate your patience and support as we work through this process.

We have let the owners know that the list of new threads is a highly requested feature. I would like to see it come back as soon as possible too.

Woke up in a hotel room at 3:30am and grabbed my phone to look at RF. Or at least I thought I did. Maybe this is a dream. If it is, it's a strange one.

On the bright side, my vacation started yesterday, so I have all the time in the world to play with the functionality...

...if I'm not dreaming.

...and I can't find the indent function. :(
I will test the bb code for the indent function:
