I got hit by a car :(

I was riding my bike to class yesterday, flying down this great hill, green light go, when a car turning right smacked in me. Bumper crushed my foot against my bike, and then I go flying. Thankfully, I didn't hit my head (no helmet!) and my North Face jacket saved me from some serious road rash (without a mark on it, too, I might add!).

Anyway, my right calcaneus (heel) bone is shattered.

Normally, I'm not one to share personal stuff, but dang, I'm just feeling so helpless, scared, off-kilter (in more ways than one).It also hurts like a motha.

My life revolves around being outside, hiking with my dog, biking, swimming, etc. Snowboarding and cross-country skiing season are just around the bend. But not for me. And what I've looked up, heel bone fractures aren't known for a speedy, or full, recovery.

I'm sorry. Got a serious case of woe-is-me, and I figured it might help to just get it out, then let it go.

Thanks.

It could have been so much worse. I am so thankful that I did escape just with a broken foot. I need to focus on that.

Been there, it sucks.
Any words of wisdom? How well do you walk now? I'm all worried I'm going to be messed up forever. I'm also terrified of the thought of surgery-- even though tends to be better for long-term recovery, it's much worse in the short-term.

I won't know how bad it is, and what they want to do about it until Friday; not knowing is the worst part.

Thanks, .lava. You're right: just gotta keep a positive attitude.

Right-hooks really suck. I lucked out - no real injuries (just a chainring scar in my calf). Did the driver stop? Did he/she receive a ticket?

Well, whenever I started throwing myself a pity party, I reminded myself how much worse it could have been.

I escaped with just a torn ligament in my knee, which healed on its own. If you need surgery, though, go for it. Long term is what matters. :)

I'm glad that you escaped relatively unscathed.

The driver did stop. He was just a kid, and was pretty shaken up, so I felt pretty bad for him; and I did dent his bumper. I really don't know who's fault it was, if anyone's. I might actually be to blame. I was going through on a green, and he was turning on a green. I didn't see his blinker and he didn't see me. Just one of those unfortunate accidents. I should call the cop who gave me his card to find out the legal side of things.

I'm glad that your knee healed well. Here's to good outcomes! :drunk:

Good luck on the recovery.

I'm terrified every time I see a biker while driving. When I see them riding along the road, and realize that I have to pass them, I get scared. I clench the wheel, and if there's no traffic in the other lane, I try to go as far away from the biker as possible. If they fall at the wrong time, or stop paying attention for a second, or swerve a little, then they could die or be seriously injured. And I'd feel bad forever.

And one time, there was a little kid coming down a hill next to the road, and it looked like he was going to ride right into the street. I slammed my foot on the brakes and swerved to make sure I didn't hit him. It was really scary.

I don't like how the roads are set up for bikers and drivers. It's too dangerous.

Wow, Falvlun, that's too bad. I'd just glad you weren't badly hurt. I'm assuming this is going to teach you to WEAR A HELMET!

Well, with all the signs like this one...

I figure that it's only fair in return that you guys share your bike lanes with cars.

I can literally say I feel your pain, Falvlun. Same exact thing happened to me about 15 years ago. Had to have my right ankle reconstructed. Still have 4 big screws and a plate in there.

*(and I did hit my head btw. :p)
*wait, did I just hear half the forum say "Ah! So that explains it"?

You'll be OK, man. Just think about how strong your arms are going to be once the cast comes off (from using the crutches).

Also: shop around a bit (or a lot) for a decent personal injury lawyer. I did and the extra effort really paid off.

Did the driver even cared to assist you to the nearest hospital? He should have...

Well, I hope you'll be better soon^^
