I pardon my son

Great news!

Statement from President Joe Biden

Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted. Without aggravating factors like use in a crime, multiple purchases, or buying a weapon as a straw purchaser, people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form. Those who were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties, are typically given non-criminal resolutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.

The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. Then, a carefully negotiated plea deal, agreed to by the Department of Justice, unraveled in the court room – with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process. Had the plea deal held, it would have been a fair, reasonable resolution of Hunter’s cases.

No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong. There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.

For my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They’ll be fair-minded. Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice – and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision.

I would have done it too, if I was in Joe's shoes
So it's a club of 3 now, then.

3 presidents have pardoned family members. The other 2:

- Bill Clinton (pardoned his brother, Roger Clinton, facing drug trafficking charges)
- Donald Trump (pardoned his son-in-law's father, Charles Kushner, facing tax evasion and illegal campaign donation charges)

I am dead against any president pardoning his family, friends and supporters or backers. If this is what pardoning has come to, it needs to be taken away as a power.
When Trump was elected all the rules got thrown out. If it was McCain or Romney who won the election Biden wouldn't have done it. But will what we are all seeing going on with Trump's picks for the administration it's going to be a nasty and vile DOJ going after everyone. Biden was just cutting off the inevitable attack on Hunter by Trump's jackls.

And if Trump is going to be a dictator on day 1 I think we can let Biden do a good thing to protect his son from a corrupt administration that will begin it's attack on January 21.

Hunter was treated so differently than anyone else with similar charges, and the time he was facing was vastly over the top in comparison. Trump would've weaponized the DOJ to inflict as much pain on Joe Biden as possible through his son. I didn't think Joe had it in him to change his mind about pardoning Hunter, but I'm glad he did.

I completely agree.

From my perspective, Hunter’s crimes are minor compared to those of a murderer, rapist, or terrorist. Additionally, he paid what he owed and demonstrates sobriety. Even if he were not related to me, I would give him a pardon and tell him that I trust him to always do the right thing from thence.

Exactly. The lopsided prosecution was intended to punish Joe Biden through Hunter. That's not justice.

High profile cases get unwanted attention.

I agree IMO if Hunter had been an ordinary John Doe it wouldn't have happened.

At the same time IMO if Trump had been an ordinary John Doe his charges over Stormy wouldn't have been manipulated and changed to felonies so he could be prosecuted after the statue of limitations ran out.
Probably wouldn't have happened if he hadn't chose to run again.

Both parties have been manipulating things for their own gain. It sux but it is what it is.

Political persecution is looking to become the normal play.

Always are there reasons for Presidents
to pardon the favored few. Corrupt.
I do not think that is the case here. There was a legitimate plea bargain that was going to happen. It was not a sweetheart deal. He was getting the same treatment as anyone else with his low level criminal record. That was not good enough for the Republicans. They made it political and that put it back in Biden's lap. There will be howling from the right but we know that this is just a mote compared to the beam in the eyes of Republicans.

I'm of two minds on this one. On the one hand, I'm against corruption and nepotism, on the other, I think you can't win when you play by the rules while the other side cheats.
Trump has made nepotism socially acceptable in the US, bigly. He (and the rest of MAGA) shouldn't complain.
