Sort of pondered that myself, seeing as we do have a sexuality forum on here.

Methinks it has to do with the idea arriving in the means of Dharmic explanation
(ie. Guru, chakra, energy, meditations)

Nothing wrong with coming to a select community for advice I suppose?

Do you think differently?

This is exactly it. I know the Dharmic religions have specific means for channeling excess lust.

They also have intricate,psychology-based means of dealing with issues. IE Not "Don't do that or God will be mad!"

I think its a problem that every group has to some degree. But if what you are suggesting is correct, then we should be flattered. My personal take is that its of the instinctive mind, and we should just leave it at that, neither condoning or condemning.

As far as chakras goes, its definitely below the muladara stuff, so I personally view that as irrelevant to the topic.

Interesting reasoning on the latter. :)

I'd concur this isn't just a Dharma issue....
but we'll probably be the most sensible about discussing it,
as you've basically put forth above.

Personally, I find nothing wrong with masturbation. Why?

A.) For many people it feels good.

B.) It actually has great medical benefits, such as a lower chance for prostate cancer in men.

However, if you wish to stop, find something else to occupy your mind. Read a book, watch a movie, go for a walk, post on RF :D

I know this seems over-simplified, but that is the best I can think of.

I, for one, am flattered then. I do think we would approach the topic with more common sense. So let's look at something called awareness. Where does it go? For you it goes somewhere where you're uncomfortable, and why is that? I'm guessing its in the subconscious programming you got somewhere that its bad bad bad.

So you could start by getting rid of that idea. But basically, like any habit, the key to getting rid of it is not in repression, but in suppression. Several people have given you good suggestions already, like finding a hobby, keeping busy. I would only see it as a huge problem if you can't work, or if you were trying to be a celibate monk.

My take is that most people, because of spiritual ego, like to forget the lower ones ... Patala Chakras The muladhara is just the starting point, or gateway. I think many people are functioning below that, but just can't admit it. The higher ones sound nicer. :)

Still trying to figure out why not masturbating would make you stronger. My best guess is that you need some outlet for the libido, so you'd end up exercising more.

Or even just control of it. Weight Watchers says you can eat anything you want, there are no restricted foods, there is nothing not allowed on the plan, just control how much you eat. Two slices of pizza is OK, four is not; a cup of pasta is OK, a bowl is not.

It's old coach's tales that having sex before a game saps the athlete's strength. In fact, the reverse is true. Orgasmic release can actually raise testosterone and improve athletic performance. Some of my best lifts in the gym have been aft... well, nevermind. :slap:

Buddhist technique: view pictures of rotting corpses. (Spin off of meditating over decomposing corpses.)

Yeah, this. From a Buddhist perspective, either meditation on dead and decomposing corpses, also meditation on the foulness of the body, as well as meditation on impermanence would all be good.

Am I mistaken, or is there also one where you put the different parts of the body into pile?

A little less disturbing.
I mean, the disturbing is certainly something to work with, in and of itself.
Just an alternative.

Thinking about a wrinkled lecherous 97 year old woman trying to hit on you would be enough to kill any libido.

Trouble with draining your libido? Try fapping - that usually quenches the thirst so-to-speak.

Oh wait...... xD

That's assuming your motivation isn't primarily based in sexual drive. If it is, well, you're kind of dead afterward.

Sage posted an excellent link. Masturbation--especially to internet porn--is never good.

/r/NoFap alone has over 50k members. If you include all the bodybuilding forums, sex forums, etc then there are literally millions of men trying to stop.

Go to youtube and search: no fap. There are hundreds of testimonials from men whose entire lives turned around once they broke this habit.

The Hindu idea about losing vital energies is from a time before vasectomies. I wonder if any swamis have checked to see if it makes any difference. Is the vital energy in the sperm or in the seminal fluid ?

If it turns out that the 'vital energy' is in the sperm, then maybe vasectomy is a good idea for yogis.

Actually, I suspect that the reason yogis are taught that abstinence is good for the spiritual path is because the last thing a young aspirant needs is a pregnant girlfriend.
