john lennon was on to something. but lets take this idea one step further
(if that's possible...;))
lets say science found unquestionable evidence for god somehow...what would happen then?
would god all of a sudden appear to humanity and tell us how we are to serve him, if that is what would be required?
or, if at that point after the discovery god still remains the way god is now, what do you think would happen? do you think humanity would unite or become even more divided than we are now?

what do you think?

Smoking a good deal of pot would be critical to this vision.

And LSD.

I'm not sure if it would be enough for people.

In reading (parts of) the OT, what struck me as amazing is that in the time of Moses, the people were given such miraculous signs of God's existence and they still didn't believe. I think there will always be division within humanity because we're free to choose. Some will always choose to walk the other way.

and in these stories you mostly hear (here  oops} of slavery and genocide...

but would you say most do anyway?

Yeah. It's like saying that, if George Washington existed, then so too do the myths and legends attributed to him, such as chopping down the cherry tree. Each religion has their little things they attribute to god and each their cute little portrayals of him which reflects more on their own culture and egos rather than on any real representation of god. So if god were proven true, it would only prove atheism wrong. Every theist religion ever could still be far off the mark. But most would simply presume that a revelation of god's existence would validate their religious claims, so you would have a huge rise in fanaticism and division.

But if god actually appeared before the people and started making nonsensical and arbitrary demands, then I say we should trap him in a lamp.

I could see it bringing people together if god were to reveal himself. If we knew without a doubt that there was someone watching us, then I think many of us would be more motivated to do good and to not do evil.

However, if god just poked his head in to say hi, and then was invisible once more, I could see lots of fighting over how exactly we should be worshipping this god.

But I suppose you could always argue "Well, it doesn't seem like he really cares how you worship him, since he hasn't given unambiguous guidelines."

:sarcastic ?

You commented on the more unpleasant parts of the OT. And that's what others would do if God showed up today. They'd focus on those attributes of God - the wrathful, seemingly hateful attributes and walk the other way.

You commented on the wrathful attributes of God after I pointed out the wonders that God revealed during the time of Moses.

God could show up right now and reveal all and people would still focus on the unpleasant attributes, ignoring His love and wonders.

I wonder if God feels about holy books the same way celebrities feel about tabloids.

I think that if science were to find unquestionable evidence for God, a lot more people would require nothing more. They'd be believers. And then He'd say something similar to what Jesus said to the Apostle, Thomas. It would be something along these lines: "Because my existence has been proven to you, you believe. Blessed are those who did not require scientific evidence in order to believe."
