Incel What is it?

The incel ideology followed by Jake Davison belongs to this new blurry extremism – incubated, propagated and weaponised online.

What hasn’t changed are those seduced. Socially isolated individuals with little stake in society, like Davison, are those most vulnerable. The pandemic has amplified a sense of marginalisation for many. Yet even before the first lockdown, the incel ideology was increasingly popular. Inceldom is classified within a government category known as “mixed, unstable and unclear” ideologies. This category accounted for more than half of all referrals to the counter-terrorism Prevent programme in 2019/20– up from just 11% three years earlier.

Thursday’s killings will mean that the online “manosphere” comes under new scrutiny, its sprawling decentralised network of chat rooms and gaming platforms helping to normalise misogyny. Any attempt to crack down on such hate may, though, only push its members to migrate to newer ungoverned internet platforms.

The police’s decision not to categorise last Thursday’s attack as a terror incident will likely be judged by history as an oversight. Terrorism, by definition, is the threat or use of action to intimidate the public in advancement of a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

More immediately, it appears to reflect that Devon and Cornwall police are not up to speed with the emerging threat of “mixed, unstable or unclear” ideology.
Incel ideology: a new blurry form of extremism incubated online

Until Thursday I had never heard of this, anyone know much about it?
Some are saying this is linked to White Supremacism, how? Why?

Boys and men who hate women because women won't sleep with them since they're creepy weirdos and think females ought to be doled out like a communist sex utopia.

Basically.

Akin to White Nationalism by thinking they're actually the best boys out there who are the nicest people on the planet and deserve better.

Some also tend to be no-fappers (a group whom I overall admire), which is strange considering how much they desperately want sexual intercourse without any kind of hangups.

Short answers to the bold. They both share the idea of for a certain limited group inherent absolute rights to a better life. Why? Psychology, i.e. it is not my fault in any sense that I perceive my life to be bad and thus I hate those who stop me form having a good life, because I have inherent absolute rights to a better life.

I was brought up to believe the one thing you never do is hurt a woman, maybe that is old fashioned sexism but it is to me a golden rule of being a man.

Throwing out my own definition to add - I see incels as men who've had bad luck with women, then feel like the women of society 'owe' them something, and these people become super cynical toward women, faulting them with just about everything. And sometimes even blaming feminism.

Sometimes Christine I cannot comprehend the modern world or where these ideas come from, it is so far removed from the world I inhabit. Anyone in my world advocating violence towards women especially rape would of been taken around the back of the clubhouse and given a right good kicking. It is/was just not tolerated.

Extremists come in all shapes and sizes unfortunately.

I think it's probably more fair to say that certain subgroups are hard to comprehend than ping it on the modern world.

Unfortunately there have always been those keen to demonise and blame others for their own shortcomings, or their own frustrations. Whilst a new flavour...and one I personally find particularly weak and repulsive, tbh...this doesn't appear anything new to me.

This wouldn't be tolerated in my world either, to be clear.

As @Rival has already cogently explained, incels (shorthand for "involuntary celibates") are an alt-right subculture of extremists on the internet - the so-called "manosphere" - comprised of boys and men.

They are united by a pathological misogyny, on account of their lack of fortune in finding a female sexual partner, even though they desire a sex life.

It's an ideology of hatred and motivated by an entitlement complex, born of resentment: basically, they talk like they have some kind of preordained 'right' to a woman's body. It's a supremacist ideology.

Since they have never learned, evidently, that no one has a 'right' to anyone else's body (that's their own integrity), their main grievance is with women’s ability to choose their own sexual partners.

However, other men don't escape their wrath either: incels castigate some other guys as “Chads” (allegedly popular and attractive men of some status, who are presumed to sleep with lots of women).

Its an inherently anti-human, deeply disturbing and dangerous worldview, with real world consequences in the form of violent acts and even terrorism. A horrendous case in point, the motive behind the recent Plymouth shooting here in the UK:

Plymouth shooting: thousands of boys drawn to ‘incel’ sites urging them to kill women | News | The Sunday Times

Boys as young as 13 are being radicalised by the “incel” internet subculture believed to have motivated the Plymouth gunman Jake Davison, an expert in extremism has warned.

New figures reveal that three of the biggest forums frequented by those who support the woman-hating ideology are pulling in half a million clicks from UK visitors each month. On Thursday, when Davison, 22, shot five people dead, radicalised “incels” goaded others to commit mass shootings

Incels are people, usually young men, who are “involuntarily celibate” and blame women for depriving them of sex. They often hate people in relationships, and in extreme cases they advocate violence or “retribution”. They have been linked to at least six mass shootings in America.

We had some discussions a while back about Elliot Rodger, so not new to many of us.

Elliot Rodger: How misogynist killer became 'incel hero' - BBC News

Just seems to be misdiagnosis of one's own or societal problems in general. Plus imbibing the wrong information and/or that which confirms/supports one's own beliefs. Apart from his own issues in mental health terms and which no doubt contributed.

I guess they're annoyed because even girls who love boys as much as I do have standards.

But seriously, a man being rejected by a woman and then murdering her is nothing new. There's a lot of masculine aggression here.

Selflessly here for you
It is truly very upsetting and worrying that our cultures raise people with such feeling and views.

I cannot help but think of the capital vices* and how we do not seem to actively discourage them from taking root within ourselves and each other.

*Pride, envy, lust, greed, gluttony, sloth, rage.

Whether we are of faith or not, these (human) tendencies are poisonous to ourselves and those whom we encounter, but despite there being rather painless “cures” for each and every one of them, we do not teach or practise them openly and frequently enough.

I do not in any way claim to master these practices myself, but I do work on them on a daily basis:

Agains the need to be right; practise saying “I do not know” when not knowing and “I am wrong” when mistaken. Notice and demonstrate that nothing bad comes from this.

Against the longing for adoration from another; strengthen the self esteem of someone else, by giving them your attention and showing them appreciation. Notice and demonstrate how healthy this feels to all of those involved.

Against comparison between self and others and against the wanting of what another has; share in the emotions of other and wholeheartedly rejoice in their good fortunes. Notice and demonstrate how natural this really is.

Against the want for what is not and the dissatisfaction with what is; nurture that which is and do not reflect upon that which is not. Notice and demonstrate the truth in that we come to value what we nurture and in that, when we nurture what we have, we lack for less.

Against the fear of lack and against the “need” for more; trust in that which crosses your path and in the fact that just enough, is often plenty. Notice and demonstrate how abundant this feels.

Against the inability to appreciate and be in the moment; be present with and attentive to all that is before you. Notice and demonstrate that life is not a race and that there is no true sense of urgency worthy of your neglect of a current circumstance.

Against idleness and apathy; do not reflect on what shall come of that which you must. Do one thing at a time and do each of what you do, well (in awareness and dedication). Notice and demonstrate how easy your tasks become when carried out in full presence.

Against the loss of humility toward self and/or others; in all and any given time, remind yourself of your own and other’s humanity and never forget who you were before you became who you are. Notice and demonstrate how patience flourishes in compassionate and forgiving soils.

A young person however, wisely pointed out to me today that while such practices may discourage the rooting of capital vices, in current worldly terms, they’d also likely leave us single, unemployed, penny-less and on the streets.

That is definitely an interesting and valuable observation too!

It is somewhat new to fashion a 'culture' out of blaming all women for their rejection. As well as dehumanising other males who weren't similarly rejected (at least on the face of things).
