I think that has been confirmed by studies of humans and animals.

That is true. The reason people act on their instincts instead of reason is becaue they like to enjoy themselves.

When I was in sollege, I "enjoyed" myself for a few hours and then suffered the rest of the night and the next day (sick then hangover). Reason told me that enjoying myself meant being moderate rather than extreme.

We reasonably classify humans as mammals. But an equally accurate classification system could categorize us as a fungus. We humans came up with the classification "mammal" because breast feeding and maternity are important to us.

There's no such thing as a mammal. We are all just freakishly deformed single-celled organisms.

Do you think of yourself and other people as a sort of Animal, or you consider yourself superior to animals?
Personally, I think we have certain defects that make us inferior animals in many ways, such as thinking we are superior to all the other animals, or worse, not acknowledging we are animals at all, which is the height of our human arrogance.
Please explain your thoughts.
Quite easily. I'll answer with a rhetorical question. What is the purpose of your question but to suggest we are somehow not part of the animal kingdom because you see us as superior to all other animals?

I am perennially mystified by the sort of question that began this thread. I wonder if those who ask such questions ever notice the number of ways that we resemble the animal kingdom, rather than a "heavenly one."

We eat and drink, animals eat and drink, and if neither did, both would die.
We excrete, animals excrete (and I'm betting angels and gods don't, in the imaginations of their conceivers). If we didn't, we'd all blow up in the most disgusting mess.
We are born and die, and animals are born and die. So far as I am aware from what I've read by theists and others, gods and angels are neither born nor die.
We prey upon other animals, and other animals prey upon each other and us. Though we like to think of ourselves as a top predator, at our end, it will be lowly worms, microbes and fungi that feast upon us.
"Talking" is not the same thing as "communicating." (In fact, talking isn't even close to the only way we humans communicate.) All animals communicate with each other one way or another -- sometimes very simply through pheromones and such, and often highly complex and specific, like whales and great apes.
Our bodies, and animal bodies, are subject to diseases and parasites -- and both we and animals have built-in mechanisms that combat both, albeit imperfectly.

I could go on for days, but why bother? My real question is simply this: "if you are really thinking about it, why would you even ask such a question?"

I was lucky. The kegger was the standard party when I was in college and the drinking age was 18. Everyone was getting drunk. Except for me. I found out early that I am somewhat allergic to beer. More than two and I start having trouble breathing. By the time I would be drunk I would be having a severe asthma attack. So I learned amazingly quickly how to make two beers last all night. The next day I felt fine and everyone else was hung over.

At 75, I've learned much the same. I regret (in hindsight) to say I certainly didn't learn it nearly early enough!

or the opposite.... they can pester you in a way that clearly communicates they are not going to leave you alone until they get what they want, which can be attention but is more often food!

I posted a photo recently of my father-in-laws napping out in a reclining chair on the occasion of his 95th birthday with his cat curled up in his lap gazing lovingly up into his face. I imagine if he opened his eyes and looked at her she might just close hers and nod off or feign being asleep to maintain her mystique.

So again, how are you defining "animal?"
Here is a scientific definition of animal:

"Animals are multicellular, eukaryotic organisms in the biological kingdom Animalia. With few exceptions, animals consume organic material, breathe oxygen, have myocytes and are able to move, can reproduce sexually, and grow from a hollow sphere of cells, the blastula, during embryonic development."

How 1213 defines animals, I have no idea.

Oh but we also resemble the gods. We aren't one or the other. We are both. In the words of Ernest Becker, "Humans are gods with anuses". Or put another way, "we are gods who take a ****".
