Is it the evil time or what?

It's a display of the difference between pity and empathy.
More people can understand the feeling of getting high or drunk as a way of escape, rather than the feeling of having to support a child by yourself.

??? The fact remains people responded the way they did. I don't believe they were "in on the joke". Do you?

Be careful, various reaction style videos on youtube have been proven to be as fake as they can be. There are even specialised actors who star in them.
You don't see whats going on outside of the video frame.

If it is evil to ignore both then, I'm in the club!

When I was a lot younger (say 22) I once offered a homeless person a meal and they refused. I figured if I would buy the meal and watch them eat it then I knew it didn't go to drinking or drugs, and the value went to their belly. I've never had another homeless person accept that offer, and the reason is simple -- it's a damn scam. I offered in this way for years, always offering to go to a public place and buy anything they felt they could eat. No takers.

We have great social services in this country as well as food pantries and other services which basically assure no one is going to completely starve. The real poverty stricken people are there! I only will help shelters/food pantries and whatever else is available like it myself now. The reason these people are sitting on the street in busy places is that they are pandering to sympathy and hoping someone will donate money with no expectation and that I don't support. I will help anyone needy with a meal, but there is no way I will give you cash! :)

Laughably, ridiculously wrong.

They are better than many other places, but especially regarding food (which was the subject of the post) we are nearly second to none. It is very easy to get welfare that will cover these things in any state in the country. Food pantries are free, don't involve the government, and usually don't even ask about your need. They will give a small families worth of weekly groceries without out questions. They just assume if you will wait an hour for the food you really need it. Shelters here fairly decent as well, our weakness is in mental health if you ask me. I think we need our entire system gutted in that sector, but the rest is pretty good.

^^More laughable ridiculousness.

Not absolutely always.
But usually. The largest majority of the time such cash is really feeding their illness, whatever that might be.

I've done a fair amount of volunteer work in various capacities and I never give cash. I'll give rides, I'll buy food, etc. but nearly always giving cash is a bad idea.

Yea, same here. Always willing to help someone in hard times if I can, but I'm not gonna help with money. Crash the couch, eat a few dinners with me, etc. Certainly!
