Is the Annie Leibovitz Photo of Miley Cyrus Immoral?

I don't think she expresses sexuality so much as dishevelment.
LoL, true!

And ya it does look like a classic painting, inspired from Cezanne perhaps. I dont get the idea of a little skin showing implying sexuality, automatically. I think its an example of people projecting their own fears onto something that clearly isn't a big deal.:angel2:

Well, all I can say is, she didn't get that smeared lipstick by drinking wholesome grape juice! She got it by kissing on them boys. And that is a sin, pure and simple!

I don't think I'd let my 15 year old take the photo but I can't be positive on that. I definitely would not allow it to be published if it was taken though. Is that being sexually repressive? I think not. I could really care less what my daughter thought of the situation either or even if she agreed to pose in certain wardrobe. If she was living under my house than she'll abide by my rules and she won't dictate everything that takes place in her life. She's 15 and I don't think is able to make the decisions that will ultimately be beneficial for her. Will all of mine be the best for her? Probably not but I would be in a better position to discern these situations than she would be. To say that there is no sexual undertone to the photogrpahs is burying your head in the sand. I don't think there is anything wrong with the photos, per se. Just don't think it's the most appropriate photograph for a 15 year old to take especially when she is beloved and admired by the age group that she is.

But maybe it's just the sexually repressed, fundie Christian in me talking.

Is this photo by Annie Leibovitz of 15 year old Miley Cyrus indecent or immoral? Why or why not? Should Miley Cyrus apologize for expressing her sexuality? Why or why not?

I'm personally waiting for the thread discussion of the photo where she is posing with her father. That should make for an interesting exchange.

That IS far more asthetically provacative!

Good observation.

What anyone else thinks is not important. If she regrets it and her parents are upset that it happened, then that's all that matters. It should not have been taken. She's a minor. It was wrong.

I have a hunch she rather regrets it exactly BECAUSE of what other people think (are saying).

What a shame. People are always squashing others with their imposing moralities and opinions of "right" and "wrong".
She's a beautiful girl and I stand to testify that she (her parents, the photographer etc etc) did absolutely nothing wrong
in "portraying" that innocent beauty as they did.

A girl partially covered in a blanket? She's probably got bathing suits that are more revealing.
I think the impropriety is mostly in the eye of the beholder. There are some people that would find the shoe section of the Sear's catalogue lascivious.

If you want to prevent inappropriate interest by everyone viewing her I suggest you dress her in a Burka (sp?).

It's amazing what some parents will put up with when their daughter is earning over three million dollars a year. If your daughter was bringing home that much bacon, would you be so certain of your stance?

Maybe she was sucking on a cherry lollipop before the photo shoot. How would you know it's not from kissing on them girls? :flirt:

I think she is a beautiful girl....

Being around Teens today is an eyeopening experience, these girls especially are much more knowledgeable than we were several years ago...They have been exposed to a world where children are pushed to grow up faster, they have more difficult choices to make and often succumb to peer pressure.... I think it just depends on how one wants to view the picture. Statistics say that girls mature faster, and Apparently Miley is certainly proving that. I think it was something that she didn't realize would be so controversial.

On the other hand, if in fact a male was found to have this picture on his computer, many people would speculate he was involved in child pornography.....

Guess we will just have to wait and see what happens next?

Good point.

I think it is important to remember that SHE (her agents, dad, promoters, etc) has promoted herself to be a "squeaky clean good country girl"..... maybe less people would be freaking out if she hadn't been playing the "good girl" role for so long... Picture does not bother me.... it just seems out of character.

.... also doesn't help her that the young Speers girl is pregnant.... think some might be projecting a bit onto Miley.

Pretty much what I was thinking too, Scott.

The pic by itself? Not a problem. The problem is that because of her deal with Disney that has lasted so long and has given her the kind of success that she and her papa enjoys, Miley Cyrus has presented herself as the "asexual" young woman consistently for years.

There isn't anything - ANYTHING - immoral or dirty or embarrassing about the photo. It just doesn't seem to fall in line with her Disney image. This will most definitely change her relationship with them, but ultimately, I think like Alceste stated, this was a gutsy and savvy career move.

She shouldn't have apologized for it. Not at all, IMO. She's 15 and blossoming, and there should be no regret or shame for her growth into womanhood. This isn't a kid photo (she's not a girl, not yet a woman :p) and I think that's what unfortunately people are expecting from her in order to keep her "clean." I think it's tasteful and actually very lovely.

oh come! on whats the matter with it?

Nothing. Except now with her apology to the masses, she has suggested that there really is something wrong with it. I think if she and her family didn't flip-flop over public opinion over a change in perception, we wouldn't be having this debate.

Miley Cyrus + Disney = asexual persona

Miley Cyrus + 15-year-old hormones, mind/body = young beautiful teenager

If the Cyrus family had just stuck to their guns about how the photo shoot was going to fit in with their deal with Disney (say for instance, they were using this opportunity to break from them - they could, she's money when it comes to drawing an audience), there would have been no apology necessary. But now it looks like the Cyrus family is still wanting Disney to take care of them.

There have been plenty of ex-Disney personalities that have gone on to have very successful careers as adults: Keri Russell, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake are a few recent examples off the top of my head. Miley Cyrus can most definitely learn from them the finesse of transitioning from child star to being all-growed-up. :D
