Is the Annie Leibovitz Photo of Miley Cyrus Immoral?

Where did you read this?
I read something quite similar in the Globe.
However, I have not heard/seen/read anything from a reputable source about it either way.

From what I've read, her parents were not on the set at the time of the so called "nude" shot, although her father had been there earlier. On the set at the time of the "nude" shot were her publicist and her grandmother, both of whom, according to Vanity Fair, approved the shot after it was taken and shown to them on the camera's digital screen.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Our culture is perverted though, and everything is about secks. She is just showing her back... what is wrong with that?? We all have backs...

I've hung out with enough kids to know that taking nude or semi-nude photos these days is almost a rite of passage in some places. The people who take the photos are usually their friends, rather than professional photographers, and the resulting photos are quite often none too high quality. Anyone who thinks it is impossible to turn a vibrant, charming, lively 16 year old girl into boiled turnip paste has not been shown some of the photos I've been shown. The Leibovitz photo is not great, but it's way above the usual run of the mill stuff being done by people's friends these days -- and maybe it can inspire some folks to take better photos. If it can do that, it should be regarded as a public service.

I disagree. Our culture is not perverted because "everything is about sex." If it is perverted, it's perverted because "everything is about unhealthy and irresponsible sex". Some cultures are just as sexualized as ours is, but do not have nearly as many teenage pregnancies, abortions, rapes, child molestations, and so forth as we do. Those cultures make it a point to encourage healthy, responsible sex.

David Bowie is much wiser than Dr. Laura, it would seem. :)

Great choice of song!

What I mean is that our culture tries to turn everything into something about secks, and everyone is so offended by everything. If we see some girl's back we all freak out and think it is a sexual thing. And our culture hates nudity too. Everyone has skin under their clothing. I don't see why we all have to act like it is so gross.

you are welcome. :D If I wasn't so used to wearing clothing, and if I knew everyone wouldn't freak out, I would gladly be a nudist. :D It would be scary to be a nudist in this society though...

The thing is to find a nice, family oriented clothing optional resort. There are probably a couple close enough to your area that you could drive to them -- although it might be a long drive. From where I'm at in Colorado, the drive times are between 45 minutes and three and a half hours to get to the best clothing optional places.

Are 15 year old girls typically asexual these days? Should we expect them to be?

I suppose many, many people in this country hope Cyrus is both.

Which would, of course, be akin to hoping she is homosexual, heterosexual, Republican, Hindu, a Yankees fan, or a lover of Wagner.

In other words, it would be removing her right to be her human self.
