Is the Concept of God Necessary To Explain Anything?

The logic works both ways: Surely you don't suggest that the millions killed in the name of religion were being religious?

People can rationalize anything.

It depends upon what your definition of religion is. Some people think religion is all about gaining power, and bending people to your own beliefs.

Rationalization is not reasoning. Reason, as conceptually demonstrated in things like logic and deduction, follows rules that limit it. Rationalization is making excuses.

She sure can waffle....

I love the part where her characters explain smoking cigarettes in terms of symbolizing man's creative fire, held in the hands he uses to control the world. Turns out, Ayn Rand smoked, and she was trying to come up with an ethics for smoking to justify it. Ayn Rand provides a complete philosophy for kids who have just thrown away their parents moral system and embarked into the world on their own, but when they realize Miss Rand rationalizes everything the way she rationalizes smoking, they throw the book away and grow up.

Friends,
The original post by Sunstone was

From there to Ayn Rand.
Concepts are like that; each will perceive according to his own perception.
Besides Ayn Rand's world is not reality as each is dependent on others for their needs and wants and then the human kind is dependent on nature; none can do things on his own.
However, reiterate that the concept of god is not necessary in today's world one needs to replace that with more REAL things like nature / existence / etc.
LAO TSU was the first man in human history who tried to speak about god in a differnt way BUt firstly he said that truth once spoken does not remain the truth because like what is said earlier 'People perceive in their own color'.
TAO or god has been explained by Lao Tsu in his Tao Te Ching which requires both logic and intution to understand Tao. By being ordinary man too becomes extraordinary like Lao Tsu.

Is the concept of god necessary to explain anything? If so, what? How is it necessary? If not, why not?
Yes. It's necessary to explain us. The actual existence of "God" aside, the concept of God is certainly a part of the hunan condition, and it would be very difficult to even begin to understand we humans without understanding the God-concept, and how it works within us.

I think no.

I find that a lot of people play the "God did it" card when theyve run out of juice in a discussion. I find it difficult to respond to it aswell because as soon as I or anyone else sais "I don't know", the God card gets thrown at you like you're some sort of peasant.
Then the prove it card gets played and we are going round in circles forever and ever. I'm not saying everyone does it but it happens quite a bit.

I think everything has a scientific or logical explanation to it. Humans just havn't found it all out.

I also think when it comes to beliefs, it's strong opinions and educated guesses. No one really knows for sure. I kind of like that though otherwise we would have nothing to talk about. :)
