Is western civilizations plight of the homeless a sad, glaring example of religious hypocrisy?

In the most affluent western countries, It seems that homelessness and extreme poverty grow larger. This poverty is visibly noticeable in the UK, America ,Canada and parts of central Europe.

Western countries are often melting pots of religion and spirituality. With all the different religions and spirituality movements, do you think that there lies hypocrisy that eats at the facade of those who work and engage in apathetic, indifferent professions?

With many world religions and spiritual movements such as new age, do you think that there exists a poverty of humanity that opens up difficult questions about the peaceful, humility and compassion that many religions or spiritual movements claim to advocate

BS propaganda. Homelessness is self-imposed by drug addicts, alcoholics and the mentally ill. If you want to see real poverty, go to third world countries run by socialist oligarchs. On an international scale, America's "poor" are wealthy, having free everything from indoor plumbing to food stamps, welfare, healthcare, tvs, electricity...I could go on and on, and there are jobs on every corner.

It's a reality that's exacerbated by Western culture, imo. People have a tendency to associate those on the street with laziness, drug use, and other such things. Why spend tax dollars on welfare for those who won't even help themselves, or who would try to cheat or take advantage of the system?

It's a disgusting point of view, and shows a great deal of ignorance for what these people deal with, imo... But it's a point of view shared by many regardless of their religious (or non religious) views.

65 or 70 percent are alcoholics or drug addicts.
Many more are mentally ill.

It is extraordinarily difficult to treat those conditions.

Now, we'd all be better off if they could be cured and put
productively to work. Who would dissgree with that?

If the problem were only a matter of giving a hand up
to sincere, honourable people who only wish to
have home and work..we could do that.

You find the pov of unnamed others to be disgusting and
ignorant? Tell us your solution.

Seriously. The sorriest bum in the USA has easy access
to material splendor far beyond what is possible for
at least a billion poor world wide.

I put a lot of money toward helping the poor, but it
all goes to SE Asia.

I never considered the argument that the homeless were privileged because of colonialism. But maybe I should consider your point of view. If the homeless are privileged, than i guess there is a problem. I never considered it. I've see elderly homeless die in northern California because emergency shelter was filled to maximum capacity

The hospitals usually shew them away if they wait in the waiting room

Homelessness and its associated problems do not arise in a vacuum. Arguing that they are consciously "self-imposed" is a severely reductionist view, and one may ask by whom they are "self-imposed." Access to proper nutrition (which many people in the U.S. do not have, hence higher obesity rates than in Northwestern Europe) and clean water, to not mention chemical-free food, is a luxury that slum-dwelling peasants and ex-blue-collar workers cannot afford, given the loss of their previous livelihood to land buyouts, mechanisation, outsourcing, and other complex, market-influenced forces. Also, anyone can point to the failures of "socialism" by ascribing such a blanket, amorphous term to complicated local regions under the influence of colonial legacy. Socialism has a complex history dating back to the Enlightenment, and is a nuanced and diverse complex in itself, and even within Marxian socialism there has been much divergence. Finally, one cannot expect a former colonial society to implement socialism without the resistance of neocolonial powers and local client-elites who benefit from the extraction of resources. Most of the "third-world" cases cited are not purely Marxist states but capitalist variants. Finally, a number of states in Latin America and Africa are better off than others, e.g., Costa Rica. vs. Honduras and Senegal vs. the Central African Republic.

The homeless in America should be grateful

The homeless in America should be grateful

I assume that was some kind of sarcasm?

Trade a few of your homeless to work
at the Cairo dump for a living- or they could
refuse the conditions, and just die. Meanwhile,
the ones who (shudder) found themselves traded
to say. Los Angeles to find their way-

I expext they actually would be grateful.

I feel bad for people who live in misery. I
dont, and it is largely a matter of fate.
Born lucky, many ways.

Now, I have never touched dope or alcohol.
Those will do "fate" or bad luck for you.

There was a time though, when if I had not had
strong family support I would have killed myself,
either by jumping from a high balcony as I so nearly
did, or, more slowly by giving up on life.

What happened to me could happen to any woman,
or really, a similarly devastating life event, to anyone.

I am far from without compassion. Those who can benefit
help really should receive it in full measure.

Do you feel that all the homeless could be brought back
into society if we'd just put the resources into it?

I feel that you are not being serious because you are ignoring the historical downtrend that exasperated American poverty. I also feel that you are not being serious because you are making a generalization without facts. I have almost worked my self to death while trying to get myself out of homelessness. I became homeless for being a good employee. I wasn't able to goto the labor dept for the various whistleblowing in 2009 2011 and 2014

Here is a link of American conditions that are similar to the places you mentioned

I should take you seriously, saying my numbers on
alcohol and drugs are w/o basis??

Or that you think working for Amazon is comparable to
living at the dump in Cairo?I Goodness. I kinda think
you have not seen whst "3rd world" is all about.

You been there? I am guessing not.
The plight of OFW in places like Kuwait?
And yet they keep coming, it is better than
Bangaladesh.

The "historical downturn that exasperated ( sic) :D
American poverty "???

Downturn?

Theres a couple billion people who would love the
chance to get in on this downturn.

Im glad you escaped poverty and homelessness.
We notice you did it by working hard.

Same method the Chinese immigrants in California
were using 100 plus years ago. Discrimination,
violence, low pay, "economic downturn" they just
kept going and found a way. Like you did.

Whst do you suggest for the alcoholic bum?
He isnt there because of some economic downturn.

Your cure is..?

I've found that finding a good charity is hard. They're either selling my name to every sleaze in the country, or are sucking up 80% of the Gross, or the local dictator takes a huge cut. I recently came upon a medic through a relative who regularly goes to Haiti to treat people there. The guy's a saint, not only for what he does, but because he's an honorable man.

The red cross financial mismanagement of haiti is not only shameful but criminal in my opinion. Terrible. Disturbing. Poor Haitians

I have been fortunate in that regard. I know exactly where the money goes.

I've rebuilt after typhoon, provided clothing, food, paid for- ah but
never mind, I, it's not about me. The help I give really does
help.

I do not know how one can help a derelict alsoholic.

Because of colonialism? Cant really say you
never considered it! Seemed
most unique and original to me.
You are probably the only person in the world
to come up with that!

I think the solution is that there should be less of a gap between rich and poor. Those who are better off should voluntarily take less for the job, and those in the lower part of the company should get more. If this doesn't happen we have to tax the rich more and give the money to the poor. It's better that the eradication of homelessness and extreme poverty be voluntary, but if not we have to force the situation a little bit. Yes, there will always be those who are relatively poor but we have to keep away from extreme poverty.

Wage gap can be pretty bad.

But the homeless? Go to homeless camps and hand out money?
