Avi, I seem to recall you saying that reform Jews are generally more intelligent than the Orthodox Jews because they have a more open-mind and are more willing to accept change. With all your great intelligence Avi, can you please explain to me how asking of someone to at least do a bit of homework/research before coming to ask the most basic of questions has anything to do with the Judaism DIR, religious extremists, or anything that even comes close? Seems to me that this post of yours is quite representative of your thread.

He is more like a Conservative Rabbi. He was President of the Board at a Conservative Synogogue. But I am still quite fond of Rabbio and respect Levite.

Actually i was wondering when you'd show up. The Thread was too perfect for you to miss. After all you use every single opportunity you can get to proclaim that you have been thrown out of the DIR by the darn extremists who dwell in it.

Actually, when I wonder about anything, the first thing I do is look it up on Google. You'd be surprised how much useful information and book recommendations you'd find, if only you took the time to look.

You have no problem answering his questions, yet all you're doing is wasting everyone's time instead of actually answering them. I'd help anyone in need if the opportunity presented itself. By attempting to make him realize that searching for his answers himself is better than just getting the answer, we're helping him more than you are, even if you had actually answered his questions.

It is true that the people in the DIR were very mean to me. But now I have one penalty point against me so I cannot re-enter the DIR because if I do I will be immediately attacked by someone trying to give me a second point. I cannot risk that.

Also, being an extremist is not an insult. For example I am an extreme idealist. It is a statement of fact. As a Conservative Jew living in an Orthodox community in Germany you are not a good judge of extremism. Sorry.

Are you a Feminist ? If so, why not behave more professionally like they do in the Feminist DIR ? Even though I disagreed with one of the Feminists in the DIR we resolved it without threats of reporting.

Ok, let's start here. Jews left the Middle East and headed for Europe in waves, because after Mohammad, the situation in Israel became pretty awful and kept getting worse.

There were primarily two routes to Europe: one through the Mediterranean and through Greece, all the way to Rome. The other route was through Africa and up to Spain. Some ended up staying in Morocco.

We could also review the earlier waves, after the Fall of the First Temple, the Jews were exiled to Babylon by the Assyrians. After the Fall of the Second Temple, there was a huge bloodbath and it is believed as many as a million Jews were killed.

Jews started arriving in huge waves to Europe in the latter part of the first millennia and even more in the early centuries of the second millennium. Moses Maimonides was a very famous Rabbi, scholar and physician of that period. He is known as the Second Moses (bonus question: who were the First and Third Moseses ?).

I could go on for hours, but I think at this point I will stop for a breather and let you share your thoughts.

Btw, I am a scientist and engineer, so I am not so great at the history. On the other hand, Metis knows much more about this than I do, he is an anthropologist and a reform Jew. If you are nice to him, he can tell you many cool stories. Also, we are lucky to have two brilliant Rabbi's, Rabbio and Levite, but they are usually mad at me for something, so they are sometimes hard to find.

Sorry I did not provide my sources. These stories are pretty much from my head. I am usually better at providing links, but tonite I am a little tired.

I hate to admit it but I don't know anything about the history of the area outside of myth and modern events. As a born / raised Jew all I learned in Hebrew school was about how the land was ours and so we got it back, and now the evil Jew hating Arabs want to kill us. (Though I'd like to point out my family itself was never this way, in their defense). Now that I'm an adult and we had this latest conflict, I'd really like to know the whole story. Why did Jews ever leave and end up being more common in Europe, for example? I'd like the whole story (with sources please) but it's so unrelated to my focus that I can't go off on a researching crusade. Any help would be appreciated.

My understanding is pretty much what Avi wrote. But there's an overarching point - Jews went where persecution was less and where they could more or less live a decent life. That story continued in my background to my relatives leaving Eastern Europe to escape pogroms and persecution and coming to America.

Thank you Sunrise. Yes, we can discuss the late European period as well. The Enlightenment was a great time for Jews in Germany and Europe. reform Judaism (with a small "r") sprung from that period.
