There are good reasons why many people do not discuss religion and politics. That is the life blood of this forum.

Many times it is hard to see who drew first blood. It may not have happened in any paticular thread, but it did happen somewhere. A thread gets reported, there is blood everywhere and our members are abused beat up and bloody.

People are upset and everyone is getting personal. When a subject gets heated it is hard not to.

When the staff cracks down, everyone cries for free speech. When we let people go at it, people get mad and leave.

This is why we have the report button, our members decide when enough is enough.

Alceste, I love you hon with all my heart. We never hardly ever agree but you keep me grounded and give me cause to reconsider my positions.

You are wise and you are strong. This forum is a part of you just as much as you are a part of this forum.

We all enjoy the freedom to speak our minds here. Many times that freedom comes at a price.

I am sorry you are offended and understand why you might need to take a break.

My heart will break if you do not come back to us.

I remember a debate about homosexuality that we had earlier, where you called me a "bigot" for my views on homosexuality being immoral. I didn't think it's enough to make either of us leave the forum, though.

I'm sorry to hear that you're leaving, and I never hoped that difference of opinions lead to the forum losing any members, especially ones as frequent as you are.

I would ask why you thought so, and it's not like that doesn't happen literally every day on the forum in at least a few threads, yet I'm still here.

That's the point of RF: we get to debate completely opposite views to ours. After all, how would we have anything running here without the constant disagreement?

Yipes! It is something special.

But Alceste's comparison of gay marriage foes to *edit* is the very same tactic which she decries in others, ie, demonization by comparison.
Smoke too was at times abusive towards those he disagreed with. Civility shouldn't be dependent upon whose ox is being gored.

Some observations:
I see some animosity & opposition to gays. (& Republicans & Democrats & Libertarians & socialists & Xians & Muslims & so on)
But I notice even more hatred & uncivil commentary directed at those who oppose gay marriage. (Hoist by one's own petard, eh?)
It would pay to accept that people will have opposing views, some of which will feel offensive.
We can't beat or insult anyone into becoming more tolerant of an alternative perspective.
But we may discuss & persuade without feeling hatred or smugness.
If you want to change minds, this works best.
Your mental health will benefit too.

Fortunately, we have more freedom of speech than that in this forum & in the USA.
Those of us with thin skins & quick tempers must learn to cope with it.

I urge civility towards all.....gays, anti-gays, black folk, white folk, Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals, etc.
I've been pretty clear about this.

I have friends who hold views I detest, & they feel the same way about mine. Yet we are civil to each other.
These differences should be discussed, & this can be done with friendship & candor.
Even libertarians & Marxists can be friends, as can liberals & racists, fundies & gays, atheists & believers.

Well I feel for the O Poster. Posts/Threads get deleted by interpretation of rules without naming the accusers.
Snide remarks are being argued in this thread by a couple posters. Comments like "you havent been here long enough to have opinion" is a nonesense argument. People read posts in forums for years, then join and they are up to date.
