Good point.

I voted yes because people are going to do it whether or not it is legalized.

And I think the police are fighting a losing battle to end prostitution because
it is so wide-spread. I think the police should focus more on putting actual criminals
(rapists, murderers, etc) behind bars than putting people in jail for getting their rocks off.

But that is just my two cents that ain't even worth that much... lol

In general, I think it's a bad idea to try moralizing society by criminalizing vices. People will still indulge in their vices, they will simply do so illegally, creating a black market that puts people in danger, leeches away public monies when authority attempts to suppress it, and in this case, becomes an uncontrolled vector of disease transmission.

It also doesn't make sense to make something illegal which is a private contractual matter between two consenting adults, and which can be a huge source of revenues for public treasuries, from taxes, licensing fees, and increases in tourism.

Illegal prostitution creates limitless opportunities for women to be sexually exploited, abused, cheated, and put in harm's way. Legal prostitution ensures that nobody is having sex who has not chosen to have sex, or who is not capable of consenting to have sex, and that sex workers are being adequately compensated, decently treated, and are working in relatively safe conditions. Not to mention that sex workers may feel freer to report abuses or victimization to police if they are not themselves lawbreakers, and they will have access to better medical care as well if they are unafraid to list their correct occupation, and free to file for workman's compensation, or social security.

Legalization makes sense for the prostitutes, for the patrons of prostitutes, for the employers of prostitutes who are not involved in other illegal activities, for the police, and for the public treasuries. Of course it should be legal.

Should Prostitution be legalized?

I put not sure. On the one hand, I don't think prostitution should be legal and I think it should be easier for women to get high paying positions and other jobs so they wouldn't be forced to sell their bodies and could get paid for using their brains, not vaginas. However I do realize that, since prostitution is illegal, this leads to many perils in the "profession," and the spreading of diseases, being exploited by pimps and human trafficing and so on and that by making it legal, you could get rid of these aspects and better stop the spread of diseases. I think, more discussion is needed.

If you don't believe that Puerto Rican Americans ought to be able to get married in this country, you are a bigot. If you don't think African Americans should be allowed in the military, you are a bigot. If you think it ought to be legal to refuse to hire Asian Americans, you are a bigot. And in case you're missing the point, there's only one group in America against whom the bigots are winning in all three areas

 Could you explain this one? Prostitution is aimed at selling sex acts, not ethnicity.

I don't think "bigot" means what you think it does.

For the sake of men being shortchanged in the sex department sex for pay should be,liceced and avaiable where ever needed. Women marry to have children men marry to have sex whenever. Once married it does not happen

Absolutely yes! If people are comfortable doing it, why should anyone stop them? If it were legalised everywhere, the safety standards would be higher for both the prostitute and customer and there would be a lot less prostitutes being beaten and killed (among other advantages)

It's a public service of sorts, and people shouldn't be punished for choosing that way to make a living. I almost wish I could do it - it'd have to be easier and more profitable than my crappy 9-5 job!

The slavery thing is a ******* ridiculous argument, if you want to outlaw something just because people are sometimes forced to do it against their will, then you have to start by outlawing farming.

If there was a legal method for setting up escorts so that they were forced to be tested, and every client was forced to be tested before hand to weed out the diseases, AND they could actually enforce it all.... I would say sure what the hell.

this is what is done in australia

im not sure how well the monitoring of safe sex practices is done though... but prostitution is definitely legal. It comes up as an occupation on the taxation offices list of occupations.

Brothels appear to be legal in Spain but not in the UK.

My hypothesis is that access to controlled brothels might influence and reduce the number of rapes*:

Spain = 2,530 reported rapes
United Kingdom (England and Wales) = 12,637 reported rapes
(source)

* I am quite aware that statistics depend on many extraneous variables and that the number of reports may influence these results.

Reason, and reason again
Criminalization only endangers Johns/Janes and prostitutes. Not only does street prostitution lack any health provisions, but also by being made illegal it subjects good people to the criminal world. Anyone who has even observed drug networks in a local community can attest that by criminalizing certain drugs the government has made criminals out of good people. Someone who even wants to buy pot is likely to be introduced to harder drugs and violence than someone who wants to purchase alcohol from a convenience store. Of course during Prohibition this was not true as the law went down hard on booze... and we saw a rise in crime and deaths by poor moonshine. [Even in this day and age few people realize that liquors like vodka can kill you if you don't remove methanol]

Prostitution suffers the same effects.

Legalization and regulation of prostitution just makes the most sense.
