I doubt that many potato farmers would risk governmental wrath just to grow potatoes. Unlike marijuana growers who have to the point of taking up arms to do so.
lol you’d be surprised. A lot of peasant revolts in history were started over less ;)

Legal growers here aren't at risk, haven't taken up arms to do it, and do it with a government license when the intent is commercial.

Yeah. And now they get drunk. Because, well, honestly doesn't make any sense to me how they think alcohol is ok but weed isn't. A drug is a drug, intoxication is intoxication. But I've not known violent and belligerent potheads like I have drinkers.
I can explain, they knew the truth about alcohol back when it was banned as well but the same forces and reasoning normalized drinking. Everything they warned about with the legalization of alcohol came true. The cost in lives and resources is an accepted byproduct of the freedom.

The deleterious effect of the weed life is much more subtle, but frankly people who smoke also drink. Life is just a big party for part of the population.

Do many judge this issue just with regards to the USA? So many all around the world consume alcohol, for millennia no doubt too, and the solution seems to be - don't aim to get drunk! - and where their alcohol usage doesn't tend to see the catastrophic scenarios so often allied to alcohol use by the few. For the many, alcohol usually is a pleasant relaxant and not something that unleashes one's hidden aggression or wantonness.

I wish more wouldn't see all addictive behaviours or simple usage as necessarily being equivalent.

A certain percentage of the human population is too weak to moderate. I'm not calling for a ban on alcohol, I'm simply pointing out the reality of the effect on a population.

I suspect this can be applied to almost anything though - as to many abusing whatever it is.

Marijuana will definitely help with the appetite. I've used it for those purposes on many occasions as I'm usually underweight and in need of some meat on my bones.

Unfortunately, the problem is now too much weight gain. And he is self-conscious about it. To add to the problem my husband is one who calls it like it is.

I've never taken any recreational drugs, apart from a few ciggies at school and my alcohol habit - which is more about how much I can afford (as to quality) than dependence, so I have no especial views apart from the harms that anything might cause - as mentioned. Including, like this for example or similar:

And where one might be caught out in some emergency situation and not being capable to react appropriately - apart from the money that still might go to the black-market despite any legalisation.
Do you drink coffee, tea or maté? Do you alter your neurotransmitter levels with music or exercise?

Funny story about that ...
We got this new program at work that I just could not figure out. I sat there staring at it for several hours, freaking out, trying to figure out why I couldn't figure it out, worrying that maybe I'm told old for this lol. Anyway, I decided to just get up and walk away from it for a while. I realized I had a joint in my pocket, so I decided to go outside to calm down and take a couple of puffs (I don't normally do this at work, but I was having a really tough time with this, like on the verge of a panic attack kind of tough). So I go back up to my office, sit at my desk, take another look at my screen and suddenly ... the whole program made sense! Like, everything just fell into place and I got it! I felt like a freaking genius all of a sudden, when just ten minutes ago, I felt like a complete moron. It was pretty cool. And unexpected. Anyway, I don't necessarily recommend smoking pot at work, but I just thought I'd share, because it seemed appropriate. :)
I had a similar experience in college. I was on academic probation and struggling with the material. This was the '70s, so drugs were everywhere.
One weekend I tried a certain hallucinogen in my bedroom; one dose, and I was on the dean's list by the end of the semester. It was as if my whole brain were reorganized in just a few hours.

What's "growing up" have to do with enjoying a bit of euphoric high? People of all stripes have always done this. The drug of choice and delivery method just varies.
Mature people don't need to self-medicate in order to enjoy reality. Drug use is self-centered behavior.
