what fuels this rise of the far right in europe do you think?.
Right now, it's the popularity of anti-mask and anti-vaxx movements.
If we want to look at the bigger picture, it's more complicated, and I don't think anybody really knows for sure. There are different theories and models to explain the endemic popularity of xenophobic authoritarianism, but I think they all fall short in one area or another. One thing we should not brush aside is that these kinds of movements have been popular before, so this is probably not something unique to our current situation.
I personally think the key to their attraction is that they do not offer a particular, central ideology like e.g. Marxist movements did, nor do they coalesce around specific policies or sets of policies that people would want to enact like e.g. modern Green or environmentalist movements, but that they rather center around what I would call a "politics of resentment" - a kind of attitude or emotional core of resentment and slighted pride that appeals to a lot of people for different reasons. We can go over this in detail later on if you like, but I believe that people have a wide variety of motivations why they support these movements or sympathize with their ideas, and the vagueness of xenophobic-authoritarian ideology allows for a broad spectrum of beliefs and groups who all share these resentments.
