Misconceptions about Hinduism

Question: I feel like today many of us Westerners have a misconception(?) of Drugs being substantially involved in Hinduism. I'm sure Hinduism, being an eternal religion, has it's fare share of followers who dabbled into Shamanism and using plants/herbs to explore spiritual states of consciousness... but my gut tells me that these traditions - if at all present in Hinduism, were merely later inventions that never at all played a pivital role in Hinduism.

For example, trying to link Shiva with cannabis.. I haven't researched it enough really but my gut tells me that whatever plant was associated with Shiva is not literally cannabis but is symbolic for something like divine wisdom. For example, the vast majority of the world does not read that verse in the New Testament in Revelations about herbs and associate it with cannabis.. only a very, very small proportion of the world (namely Rastafarians) interpret the verse this way. I could be wrong though, and hence why I'm asking this question.

Anyways, did drugs ever play a pivatol role in Hinduism or was it more of a later invented tradition that was for the most part divergent of the core paths and teachings of Hinduism? Let me explain what I mean by "divergent" - if you look at Buddhism for example, of course there were Buddhists throughout the ages that dabbled in shamanism and using drugs for spiritual reasons... but if you study the core teachings and principles of Buddhism, it's blatantly obvious that such drug use diverges from these principles; Buddha's 5 precepts prohibit intoxicants/drugs.. I don't think it could anymore obvious that such traditions were for the most part divergent of Buddhism at its core.
Blame Lord Chandrashekhara for that.

The moon in Lord Shiva's hair....

The moon signifies Soma (in the Rig Veda) and is closely associated with the Bindu Chakra (see my avatar and title).

The Bindu is that which resides 'outside time' or 'no longer influenced externally' (would be a more accurate description of Sādākhya Kalā).

Anyway, the Bindu Chakra is that which must be awakened to experience Samadhi.

The Bindu produces drops of nectar called Soma, which is created when Ojas (seminal fluid/blood/veerya) gets converted to Tejas (spiritual energy) and this is why brahmacharya in yoga is essential.

This Soma can be 'milked' through practicing Kechari Mudra (which I have briefly touched on) and this Soma is what 'cools down' Kundalini Shakti before She reaches Sahashrara Chakra. It is so the Yogi can take the full force of Shakti in 'increments' instead of all at once.

So, this is 'Siva's drug'. This is the Soma of the Vedas. Although they refer to it as a 'plant' of sorts, it's no such thing. People will never find a plant that matches Soma...no matter it being ganja, datura, blue lotus...whatever.

Now, you know this.

Myth: You can convert to Hinduism
Fact: You can't :)

As per my knowledge ,there is no any conversion vidhi :D in Hindu Scriptures to convert castless persons into hindus ( varna-people )

Mlecchas are not elligible for any vidhi or sanskara which are explicitly mentioned for 4 varnas. In varna dharma ,even shudras have many restrictions then what to talk about castless persons.

I´m going to loose my civil tone soon. This is too much. You do NOT know what you are talking about.

You are really funny. :) You are showing me a certificate?

Court ,cerificate all these are man made. It doesn't have any value in Hindu scriptures.

The fact is that there is no any conversion mentioned in Vedic scriptures .

Afterall, certificate is just a piece of paper. not the divine vision of ancient sages. :)

Sssooooo?

I have been a devout follower of Kali Maa for a good year now and have felt a good many experiences and know she loves me back. The only permission I need is that of God.

FYI you say his conversion papers mean nothing because they are just man made construction but your just a man. So what makes your opinion above another?

Also just because the Vedas don't detail conversion does not mean it is impossible. I don't think they are against it either.I'm sure the Vedas don't mention shooting people with assault Rifles but I'm sure you shouldn't do it. I'm sure the Vedas don't mention proper conduct over the internet but I'm sure there are certain things you shouldn't do.

It is all completely ridiculous. In Hinduism we think a little further than just one little lifetime. We might all have been Hindu A LOT longer than him. And from the posts he makes, it does not look like he has been Hindu for that long.

Oh really? So the person born in bramhana family isn't hindu and the person born as castless is a hindu? :D

From your posts I feel that you have a non-hindu mind. You don't consider any importance of varna in vedic dharma.

Remember Following hinduism is not a joke .What do you think, any tom, dick and harry would become hindu? :D

If I cannot 'convert' to Hinduism, what does that make me? a Hindu wannabe?

Siva chose me for some unrevealed purpose and I feel if He didn't want me to be a Hindu, I wouldn't be one.

For me, Lord Siva has the final say in all this and what He says, is that if it helps me sleep better at night, then yeah, I am a Hindu.

I didn't 'convert' though, I adopted Hinduism from a very young age. For me, there was nothing to 'convert' to/from.

Initially, I thought I must be a Buddhist, you know? but, try as hard as I could, Buddhism just didn't 'stick'...it didn't 'feel right' and Hinduism just...did.

I'm also accused of being a Yogini more than a Hindu, but I can take that...I am a Bhairavi and nothing can change that either.

I'm also accused of worshiping a 'Rakshasa' and I don't care..."Yam, Yam, Yam, Yaksha Rupam - Bhairavam Kshetra Paalam" and all that...it's actually immensely empowering to worship a 'Rakshasa'...

Many will also say my practices are 'Tamasic' and 'Adharmic' do you think I care? We'll see who is 'right' or 'wrong' when Chitragupta-ji makes those little amendments in his Akashic Record there.

From what I feel, I could have been a Hindu in my past life and those who say 'you cannot convert to Hinduism in this lifetime' are basically denying the laws of Karma and Reincarnation....I pay them no mind.

What has birth to do with being hindu? and also people with castes actually does not qualify to be hindu.

You are right, discouraging other hindus is the quality of hindu mind.

First thing, I don't have any intention to insult you

If you were really a hindu and you were following it in your past life, then its more than impossible to be born in mleccha family.

In fact, you don't know anything about what is law of karma. Whatever person follows, thinks, it directly influences his the next births.

The birth in bramhana family is a virtuous thing. After doing many virtues from million births, one gets birth in bramhan family. Thats called law of karma. Virtues ripe as virtues and sins ripe as sins.

What I mean is that you weren't a hindu in your last birth :) And see who is actually denying laws of karma. :D

How do you know what I was in my previous birth and if I wasn't a Hindu either then, or now, then what am I?

What am I who studies the Vedas, worships Lord Siva, tries to uphold Dharma (as best I can), carries out Hindu rituals and practices, believes I am a Hindu, then what am I? other than 'not a Hindu' what am I?

Who has told you I am 'not a Hindu' when God tells me otherwise? The same God I worship also tells you these things?

Maybe a birth in a Brahmana family is a 'virtuous thing' but you can call me a Shudra then - even a Shudra is a Hindu. You don't have to be a Brahmin to be a Hindu.

Also, if I was not a Hindu, don't you think the mods would have banned me from posting in this section ages ago?

According to RF staff, I must be a Hindu...so, there we go.

This is sad we had such a nice thread going on teaching people and dispelling lies.
Yeah, before we even begin to dispel such 'misconceptions', we should be clear on what those 'misconceptions' actually are, or else the whole purpose of this thread is pointless.

Do you know the main thing that turns people off Hinduism? all the bickering, infighting and intolerance that occurs within the religion.

Myth: Hinduism is full of peaceful, tolerant and nice people.

Fact: A lot of us are, but as with any religion, you tend to get those select few who like to spoil it for everybody else and give Hinduism a 'bad name' that's represented to everybody else.

People tend to remember all the 'bad things' more than all the 'good things'.

Yeah, I am just a bit annoyed by this and it's not all that transparent. Please forgive me.

So, all I can say is 'I am a Hindu and screw you if you think/believe I am not one'.

I thought I was over all this...apparently...not (there's still a button there to be pressed).

I shall go and meditate now and do some 'Hindu stuff'.

Thank you...and that's all that matters!

It's about time I exercised some viveka in these matters. I have been reluctant to do it because it is anathema to tolerance and being 'open-minded', but a line in the sand must be drawn somewhere and I am now drawing that line.

A lot can be said for selective deafness/blindness when one has 'bigger fish to fry'.

How presumptuous for someone whose statements and ideas have been proved wrong and ignorant as much via experience than scripture.

At best you are merely your own limited truth, that makes you only living in your own little world of ignorance, misconception and racial hate, please, have respect for Sri Krsna and do not associate Him with your petty egocentric opinions.
