No Country For Old Men
Finally saw this Coen brothers film. Found it very compelling for much of the film. I can generally go either way on Coen bro. productions and this one I liked. I very much like the interweaving of 3 main character plots being set against each other. I also like how it shows a lot rather than thinking it has to tell the audience what is going on. So, at times, some leaps of logic are called for, but for dramatic licensing, I (easily) allow for this. I can't say I loved it, because ending is too abrupt and last 5 minutes of story is a bit open ended, given set up that came for previous 2 hours. Open ended isn't even best way of putting it. It gets David Lynch like (who I absolutely love), but prior to that it is Coen brothers in "Blood Simple" storytelling mode, and so the shift is hard to understand, I think.
Life As We Know It
Was not my choice to see this 2010 romantic comedy-drama. Saw it cause it was around the house (on DVD) and thought I'd give it a try. Very much liked it. Character dynamic between two main roles is interesting to watch. Almost wish it wasn't having to be "romantic," but also gotta admit that I got choked up when that aspect showed itself.
Tron: Legacy
Liked this one as well. I don't think you have to be fan of the original, but it helps. New one kept feeling like "Matrix" and yet this (film concept) came before that. Eye candy is fantastic in the new one, and worth price of admission. I found the philosophy in the film to be surprisingly unique. I realize other films have gone in similar direction, but hard to say the same. Though see it for visuals and not content and I think anyone could enjoy it.
Black Swan
Interesting. Compelling and mind bending. All very David Lynch like. Almost to a tee. But alas, the ending was enough of a let down that I'm around 50/50 on this one. I'd give it a second chance, and thus open to re-upping my appreciation for it.
Kick-*** (Kick-booty)
2nd best film on this list I'm writing. Very much liked this one. Saw it twice in two days which is unusual for me, but felt it deserved it. Main character was great and nice twist on stories in the superhero genre. Nicolas Cage was dynamite in this film, and normally I could do without him. Hit Girl, steals the show. Unbelievable courage to make / release a film with that sort of character role. And McLovin as a bad MF character is icing on the cake.
The King's Speech
Have little doubt why this won best picture (2010). It is great movie and 2 leading roles were acted by guys who are on top of their game. I found story a bit more educational than I would've thought going in. It does drag at times, but not too much. I will just note that this isn't top 3 for me on this list, nor did I think it was best picture from ones nominated (I'd go with Social Network).
Wall-E
Saving best for last. Yes, Wall-E would beat all the ones I have on this list. Not by long shot as the recent films I've seen were almost all likable. I found this one the best, and will admit I'm a sucker for Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and now this one. I think those other 2 would still score higher for me, but Wall-E went in directions I wasn't prepared for, and for a kid friendly film that is always refreshingly good. The philosophical points this film makes I think are a bit ahead of it's audience. Even many adults in the crowd. Perhaps not, but it came off that way to me. Like very good sci-fi. And yet, very simple at same time. Wonderful eye candy. Great work of art. If this were released in 2010, it would be best picture IMO. Seeing as it was 2008, I dunno. Probably best one from that year, though not sure. Only one on this list though I would give at least an A- grade to.
