Ride The High Country
DVD/ Color/ 93 Mins./ NR/ 1962
Out of work and in need of cash, two former lawmen (Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott) agree to accompany a shipment of gold from the Sierras to a faraway town. But while one of the friends wants to take the money and run, the other intends to finish the assignment, resulting in some serious on-the-job friction. In addition to capturing Scott's final film role, this classic Western drama also helped cement director Sam Peckinpah's fledgling career.

I watched The Man With Two Brains last night, which is very silly, but quite entertaining. And Casino Royale over the weekend, which I thought was great. I preferred the approach they took here to the other Bond films, I'm glad they've decided to take it in a new direction.

Female Prisoner 701 Scorpion
DVD/ Color/ 87 Mins./ NR/ 1972
Whoever landed Female Prisoner #701 Scorpion (Meiko Kaji) in jail will pay a mighty price once she gets out. But first, she must learn how to survive within prison walls, or else she'll be destroyed. And when freedom finally arrives, the mysterious nemesis who sent her away will finally get his comeuppance. A great Pinky violence film.

What is PInky Violence?
It's a line of sexy, action-exploitation
thrillers begun in the late sixties in Japan. These films
featured female yakuzas and girl boss guerillas duking it out
for their freedom, their pride and their own piece of the pie.
This electrifying genre mixed titillation with social commentary,
predating its closest American and European counterparts
by several years. These groundbreaking films continue to
influence some of cinema's most celebrated directors, like
Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Takashi Miike.

The Glenn Miller Story
DVD/ Color/ 115 Mins./ G/ 1953
One of the most profitable biopics ever filmed, The Glenn Miller Story traces Miller's rise from pit-orchestra trombone player to leader of the most successful big band of his era -- the early 1940s. Girl-next-door June Allyson plays Miller's wife, Helen, who learns the value of patience while Glenn searches relentlessly for "the sound" that will put him on top. Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa pop up in cameos.

Gnarls Barkely. I like "Crazy" a lot, but his other songs are great too. My favorites: "Go-go Gadget Gospel," "St. Elsewhere," and "Smiley Faces."

Pyche Out/ The Trip Double Feature
DVD/ Color/ 168 Mins./ NR/ 1967
Talk about trippy! In Psych Out, a deaf girl (Susan Strasberg) comes to California at the height of the "Flower Power" era looking for her brother, who sent her a postcard that said "God is alive and well and living in a sugar cube." Jack Nicholson plays a guy named (appropriately enough) "Stoney." In The Trip (also starring Strasberg, with a script by Nicholson this time), a TV director (Peter Fonda) gets high on LSD for the first time.

TRIVIA: In Psyche Out the band that is featured in the film is The Strawberry Alarm Clock
In the movie The Trip director Roger Corman is quoted as saying to have taken the drug LSD specifically for the experience in making this film.

Would you say this one's worth me checking out?
Actually the whole series has been interesting. The same actress Meiko Kaji plays the prisoner, Nami Matsushima. I have only watched two (the ones highlighted in red) and look forward to tracking down the other installments. The one that I recently mentioned is the first in the series and explains the reason why she was sent to jail and establishes her intense character. The movies attempt to be “artsy” and display a dramatic flair not common in films today. They are prison films and portray a great deal of graphic violence, strong language and adult situations but are quite entertaining and satisfying, I highly recommended them.

Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701's Grudge Song (1973)
Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable (1973)
Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 (1972)
Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion (1972)

I finished Band of Brothers. It's the best WWII movie out there.

Mrs. A_E and I have been watching snatches of Nacho Libre. We're so busy that it's taken us three...we haven't finished it yet...

Next up is V for Vendetta.

Count Basie demonstrates how to make one note swing. Lester Young brings his healing power to the rest of the country.
