Gorgeous Elon did it. bravo

I'm not sure if this will make that much of a difference in the long run.

What I could never understand is there's only a few giant platforms (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) instead of dozens or even hundreds of different companies. For example, whenever I visit a site (usually a news site), I often encounter icons/links like this:

Do Facebook and Twitter pay to put their icons and links on other sites, or is it the other way around? And why just those companies and not others?

No one pays, , it's down to SEO. A site with good external links gets a higher search engine ranking than those without.

The links are links to the SM pages of the organisation in question, they aren't there to promote Facebook, but to increase traffic to their own SM pages. It's just self-interest.

They may link to as many SM sites as they use.

Sometimes also have similar buttons to automatically share content.

You’re right, it could go sideways fast. More lying about election fraud. More lying about CoViD. More lying about Global Warming. More lying about violent diseased “Mexicans”. More screaming “Fire!” in a crowded theater. More Ethiopian princes who need to hide their millions in your bank account, for which they will gladly pay you.

Yet, at the same time, yesterday's censoring in the name of lying is today's truths. Hunter Biden's computer is a good example.

I think Musk will do a good job.

A win for Trump. Once again anyone will be allowed to cry 'fire', let the chips fall where they may.
Trump has nothing to do with free speech.

FS is bigger than Trump, the US and US politics.

There are Twitter users outside of the US.

Like when Joe Biden publicly stated that you can't get Covid if you are fully vaccinated? (Nancy Pelosi :"Hold my beer"), Mexico Covid map:

Not to mention all the drugs that are pouring over, the flood of Chinese made fentanyl coming from our southern border, and the complete disaster at the border, illegal immigration is at an all time high.

A win for freedom of speech and a nail in the coffin of censorship.

I hope.
A win for lies, gaslighting and propaganda. A win for autocrats and tyrants to confuse and distract people. That might be "free" but it's destructive.

That's what we thought at the time. Of course liar trump and all the utter bull**** about the 2020 election and attempts to seize power destroying America is just fine, of course of course.

So? Big deal.

That for each individual to decide for him or herself what's actually true or not.
Why should someone feel bothered by the stories others tell?
I will not prevent someone from saying that horses can fly.
He is free to say that horses can fly.
If they believe him, that's not my problem.

As Voltaire said..."I do not agree with your statement , but I will fight, so you have the right to say it, I will fight to death."
Because misinformation kills. Millions of US citizens have news and Twitter, and Facebook, and …. And still they think CoViD is/was a lie. That getting vaccinated is worse. Hundreds of thousands of people in the US alone have died because of their being misled by misinformation. Millions think global warming isn’t even happening (Yes. There are millions of US ****heads who still believe that) or if it is happening then it was ‘natural’ and/or God’s will, and/or not too bad. Millions believe that Trump won the 2020 election and that the insurrection that he and his cronies orchestrated in order to topple the U.S. government was ‘Meh’ No big deal’.

Misinformation can kill. You. Know. That.

A random Twitter user is not a media.
It is not an authoritative source.

So...nobody "searches for the truth" among random Twitter users.

They look for the truth by buying newspapers.

If I tweet that horses can fly, who will believe me?

Freedom of speech implies I can write that horses can fly.
It is not my fault if some people believe me.

Because misinformation kills.

And our completely benevolent government and it's completely reliable, sensible, and uncorruptible offices who would never undermine the U.S. constitution or trample on the rights of ordinary Americans coupled with the infinite wisdom and veracity of big tech are there to save us from the dangers of free speech.

No thanks, I'll take "dangerous" liberty over peaceful slavery.
