Musk bought Twitter

I have to ask myself another question altogether. The U.S. has just announced it's spending 7.5 billion dollars to build charging stations across the nation -- the whole nation -- to charge vehicles for the whole population of the nation. And Elon Musk just spent like 6 1/2 times that much to buy a site where you can speak your mind in 280 characters.

What does that tell us about the priorities of us humans these days?

There's an ev charging station built nearby where I live. Hasn't been used even once.

The priority is, nobody wants to buy this garbage.

Tesla has the highest market cap of any automaker in the world, and Rivian is booming quite rapidly.

EVs are fast becoming standard. In the interim, hybrid vehicles can also make use of charging stations, and PHEVs are far from uncommon.

Do you expect that everything new will be instantly adopted? You might not care whether this planet lasts longer than your life, but I bet a lot of people with kids -- and hope of grandkids -- would like it to.

Or are you another "climate change is a hoax" type?

Oh, yeah! Forgot! God will fix it all -- or destroy it all, or both. Sheesh.

Are those charging stations going to be publicly owned and free for use by the public? Or is the government giving the capitalists more free stuff?

It tells us quite a lot about humans who favor capitalism.

Honestly, I'm not sure about that at all. Check out @Twilight Hue's comment.

I favour (Canadian spelling) capitalism, and I expect the one would need to pay for charging up their vehicle -- just as there would be a charge for putting gas in it.

To be sure, government calculation might show (or seem to) that the effect on climate from the charging or the gassing is quite different, and may offer a rate that encourages one over the other. But I'm not sure I'd call that "giving more free stuff."

Well, it always strikes me that our government will spend money on things just to give it away to private sector interests so they can profit at the people's expense. It's stealing from the taxpayers to give to private business. A lot of people seem to be okay with things like that.

The capitalists would argue that this is just the free market in action and that people and governments should just leave it alone. It's the ruling philosophy we live under. I happen to think that capitalism is a suicidal philosophy, in more ways than one, but my view is a very small minority.

Most people seem to favor capitalism, and so as a consequence, we have what we have. I'm convinced that most of humanity is hellbent for total destruction anyway, so it's just a matter of time.

Freedom of speech is one of the few things that makes life worth living.

But if I use my authority as President of the United States, or as the chief of the department of justice, or the chief of the “US Bureau of Health”, etc…. and I inform you via Twitter that ongoing research shows clearly that global warming is not happening; or that Covid is not dangerous; or that Biden actually lost the 2020 election…. and I get several hundred other people, claiming to be judges and research professors, who all agree with me, then people will believe the outright lies that I am selling. ;)
There is no question at all that people will believe this. And people will die and they will let their children die because of misinformation.
They will vote and alter the foundations of the United States of America and democracy itself, because of misinformation. That is not open for debate. It is settled.

I guess this tweet sums up my point...don't you think?

I mean...if someone is confident and is proud of their own opinions, why should he fear others' opinions?

Honestly I couldn't care less what the others say.

Well it's not in my area.

The left likes to think it's a freedom to aggressively censor others who don't see or tow the line with their point of views.

As a premise, respectful debate is a must in every social platform.
But on Twitter I have often had the sensation that people do not want to listen to others' different opinions and whenever they find them on Twitter, they try to silence them.

Metaphorically, as if they wanted to tape my mouth with their hands, preventing me even from breathing. It is a very ugly sensation.

So of course you can recognise the Russian misinformation 'troll factory' output, but do you assume all others can do so - and as with Trump's garbage? Musk is seemingly relying on some dumb data - as to what are the effects of lies on some (yes, yes, I believe it all!) as opposed to others (Meh, not so much) - hence why controls are necessary.

What kind of control?
I am not understanding what you mean.
I need very factual and specific examples.
Examples of tweets which need controls

Well it seems obvious to me, that so many can control "free speech" (for their own ends), given they have the wealth and resources to influence such (troll factories and all the rest), so why would we want to allow this? Twitter is just one example of such social media, but why would we want an individual to be able to control such - even if he espouses the best of motives? Putin no doubt wants the same - but he survives because he eliminates the truth from his media. Musk's freedoms are perhaps not such but more about allowing nasty influences to thrive.

With all due respect...but don't you think you are normalizing double standards with this reasoning?

If I understood correctly, you accuse Putin of denying his own citizens a Western-like freedom of speech.
(Which is undeniable...he does.)

At the same time you don't want Twitter to guarantee everyone unlimited freedon of speech.

I mean...did I understand correctly?

Because if I did... that is doublestandardism at its best, with all due respect.

If you think denying freedom of speech is bad, it should be valid in any context.
