My disdain toward cinema is becoming unbearable

As I have gotten older I have come to realize everything I love and hold dear is turning into absolute garbage. The fact a single Disney Marvel film has made more than 5 million dollars baffles me, I would even go so far to rank the entire Marvel cinematic universe as some of the worst films on earth . . . . EVER! With Spiderman Homecoming being the worst films I have ever witnessed in my entire life, I can only imagine how bad Black Panther is quite frankly.

Me and my brother have collected over 3,000 films and a vast quantity of comics and books and by far I have seen the film industry go to absolute trash the quickest. It has ruined my experience with my own fiancee as she is unable to enjoy any film at all anymore and I am left depressed and broken by the appalling films released to the public.

Every year it is bad film after bad film. Just to name a few:
  • Jurassic World
  • Spectre
  • Kingman (entire filthy franchise)
  • Insidious (all of them)
  • Interstellar
  • Lucy
  • Birdman
  • Furious 7 (and the entire franchise)
  • King Arthur (2017)

And I will make a seperate case for Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok as I consider these films utter filth and mentally degrading to watch in any capacity even though I expressed my dislike toward Disney and its current film production already.

I came home one night after watching Star Wars The Last Jedi and it completely broke me. I had to drink a fourth of a giant Bacardi rum bottle to drown my depression after seeing the film. I was emotionally devastated knowing I no longer had anything to look forward to in cinema anymore and especially Star Wars which I held very dear to me. As of this year I have almost withdrawn from all digital western media and have barely touched any anime even.

I am just venting but I am curious toward the attitude of everybody else. Being a film snob I hope I am not being unfair to good films but I also feel that I would know a good film when I see it.

I absolutely love all these films, particularly the Marvel movies and the new Star Wars. Others I love are LOTR. I really liked Jurassic World too. The Disney and Pixar animated movies are also great, especially Moana, Inside Out etc.

King Arthur was forgettable.

I feel you are very disconnected with what most people love and enjoy watching. Nothing wrong with that, but you just have to accept this I guess.

The only thing I hate now days is I feel the pacing is too fast in some movies and plots are sometimes more complex than they really need to be. Also from everything I hear Black Panther has done really well. I also don't like super hero movies and that's all you really talked about.

It's probably also worth mentioning that we always forget or loose records of the bad movies in the past and always have the recent bad stuff in mind. Time filters out the forgettable and most of the terrible movies.

There's still good movies being made. Although I'm not the person to ask for recommendations since I mostly watch horror and comedy movies.

New Star Wars is hit or miss. Hadn't seen the most recent one. Rogue One was a great step towards EU style stuff. Episode 7 felt weird as it wasn't what I expected them to do with the canon and just continued the old extended universe's sillyness with super weapons. I've heard really good things and that I've love episode 8 as it's very much like the old EU but I don't think it's out on DvD yet.

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
I personally would like to see more noble characters, that do things that are physically possible. I'd also like to see stories that inspire optimism and hope. Formula movies are always conflict driven, but I don't care much for the adversaries they face. CGI is overdone completely. And the heroes of the movies lack depth.

I quit on movies 15 years ago. And I have yet to see any trailers that inspire the imagination.

The Last Jedi was so put on, and I didn't buy into any of it. I can't immerse myself in shallow world's. And illogical cause and effects.

I am going to outright admit I do not get along with my own youth, never did actually at any part of my own life. I am very prone to being cynical of most things brought my way and I do not enjoy taking part in something I have no knowledge of or do not fully grasp.

Could be my own bias

What about non-box-office films?

Depends, they are wearing out on me at the moment. Especially with sci-fi and horror which are my most favorite genres of all time. I am seeing them become more standardized and I am seeking enjoyment elsewhere in genres such as crime and general dramas.

I am trying to be general here and not mention obscure titles because I could write a lengthy article about Korean cinema and why it to is garbage but I doubt many here keep up with Korean cinema. I truly do not have a clue about what people watch in in theaters anymore.

I may see Black Panther but I already know it will most likely be very horrible. I have came to realize it is very easy to plot these films in how they turn out and I can do so with 99.99% certainty now.

Horror is my forte! It is the genre I am most passionate about and I have not found a single year as of 2010 where good horror films came out in succession.

Rogue One was enjoyable for the most part although it had glaring issues. Everything else in the franchise has been lack luster.

Interesting. Well I have a strong leaning towards avant garde film and arthouse but there are often scifi movies that amaze me. I think the genre (scifi) itself due to the nature of it's cultural popularity, does lend towards milking overdone plotlines and themes (like in action and romantic movies, it can easily become the 'genre movie') but it's an area I guess that you have to dig deeper to find the gold these days (as there are more and more films made in the genre all the time).

I'm not quite sure what your tastes are by while I'm at it, if you have netflix - make sure you check out Black Mirror!

So you hate all the really super popular stuff?
I mean that's fine. But I don't know if it's fair to be that angry against Disney of all companies. They appeal to a general audience and they largely succeed. So they're good at being popular? How is that hate worthy?
And even as a DC fan, I will admit that Marvel is kicking WB's ***.
But I do quite enjoy their animated universe compared to Marvel's.

What movies do you like?

Also what are your issues specifically with Spider-Man Homecoming? I have yet to meet a single person who expresses more than a disinterest, never mind hatred. And that includes film students/teachers!
I'm merely curious.

IMO, they've been pretty crap since Empire strikes back, although the force awakens was not too bad, probably the 3rd best in the series (Return of the Jedi is not a good film).

Have to admit I'm not a fan. The odd one passes the time, but can't say any of them actually qualify as being good.

King Arthur (2017)

I think I might've seen films starring Hulk Hogan that were better than this. Hulk. Hogan.

You are not alone. Let's see. A short list of things I hate about modern Hollywood:

Mindless plot
Pointless action
Lack of character development
Lack of connection with characters
Lowest common denominator appeal
Too much gun violence
Too much butchering an author's work
No aesthetic appeal to most modern movies

Just what we'd expect from a movie industry trying to market, rather than produce anything memorable.

Here's a tip, go to films you expect to enjoy. If you don't like action or super hero films, don't go to them. Other people like them. You don't have to.

It's called getting older mate. I used to love comics years back but when anime came in I was horrified, I thought it was satan's work. In the mean time anime IS comics and I can't even look at them.

I had a similar problem with the new Bladerunner. Only about 30% as good as the original.

Old and grumpy, but right about it, I know I am.
