NRA vs Sharia law new low ?

I think even the NRA card carrying (also gun totin) right wing folks must find this just plain nuts.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) has two passions: preserving the second amendment, and protecting Americans from Islamic law. He's now managed to bring his two enthusiasms together by asserting that citizens need gun rights to defend themselves against Sharia.

Gohmert began by explaining to radio host Jeff Akin why the 2nd amendment is necessary, before veering off into uncharted, Sharia-infested waters.

It is for our protection - and the founders' quotes make that very very clear - including against a government that would run amuck. We've got some people who think Sharia law oughta be the law of the land, forget the Constitution. But the guns are there, the Second Amendment is there, to make sure all of the rest of the amendments are followed.

I do not understand the American obsession with guns. Yes, if you are a rural people, living with dangerous animals in the wild, you should have a gun. Even if you live in the towns and cities, maybe you can have a gun to defend from bandits, but you do not need so many. I feel sad for the tragic events that happened where children were shot.

I heard that some fear the tyranny of their government so that they would keep weapons at home. Personally I do not think that the American government is an evil government but compared to many other countries quite benevolent.

But on the other hand I do not approve of the "Shariah" law either. I think both are irrational and absurd.

What has Sharia to do with guns?

If Americans wants to have there guns as the second amendment says then they should have them. The FBI statics show that there is a decrease in criminal behavior in America were guns are legal. The government of America is benevolent? YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!?

Ps: your communism is much worse then Sharia for a western.

Meh....some people worry about Shariah Law.
Some of those worriers will see the 2nd Amendment as one of the guarantees of our Constitutional liberties.
This is to be expected.

I am not sure how you can worry for Sharia there are only 1.5% to 0,8% Muslims in America compare that with Jews, Christians or even Buddhist.
Its just propaganda using Islam as excuse he is connected with Michele Bachmann according to the article.. I think that says enough?

I don't worry. Shariah won't be imposed upon us.
(I offer a money back guarantee.)
But I notice that some people do worry.

I don´t think people are worried i think some right wing republicans including some `mainstream` media are just preaching hatred.

That is one theory. But Sharaih is making inroads into western countries.
BBC News - Growing use of Sharia by UK Muslims
And since Islamic law is rather repugnant to us, there is fear we might suffer it.
So world events could create this fear instead of (or in addition to) "preaching".
Now I'm not saying this is a reasonable fear.

I've come across some extreme right wing Americans who have actually made the exact argument as the OP. I had some guy rant at me that Australia is doomed to be subject to Sharia because we don't have gun rights. I couldn't believe what I was hearing it was so absurd.

Australia (if it really exists) is under greater threat from dingos.
There are always fringe thinkers who worry themselves sick about some boogeyman.
Here we have people scared that Fox News is taking over the country & turning it into a theocracy.
I'd worry about really bad things happening too, except that I'm too clueless to predict what they are.
So no worries.

This is classic Louie Gohmert. He's often on the floor spewing rhetoric like this. This is their classic way of keeping the base riled up..against the government and hoping to keep the voters in their corner. I'd bet that many of those ho-haas haven't a clue what Sharia Law is...other than what they hear in the blogosphere....

No. I do expect that it will be used in mediation & arbitration when agreed to by all parties though.
But this is no threat at all. It might even be an improvement.

The ones most responsible for these bizarre opinions are crooked church ministers, crooked pastors. It is they who have the most to gain by scaring people and discouraging their clients from exploring ideas. A crooked pastor has more prestige and makes more money than an honest one of equal capability and resources. He keeps his people firmly bound to a particular voice -- his. This is the real issue, not Fox News. Fox News couldn't get away with their fantasy if there wasn't such a large audience for it. There's not a government conspiracy nor a secret cabal behind the media but an open shame.

This goes back to an earlier thought I had.... How would the NRA feel about an American Muslim wearing a thobe and kufi and beard, coming to join up
