NYC mayor compulsary imprisonment of those deemed mentally ill begins

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I thought your republicans backed said measures (racial profiling.)
I mean they’re the names behind such bills that support or otherwise endorse them, rather famously I might add, but I dunno since I’m not American
Democrats routinely accuse Republicans and essentially do the same things themselves.

They are just as bad if not worse than one another.

This trend of accuse and jail without due process needs to end.

Weither it's the Patriot act on suspicion of being a terrorist , stop and frisk on a whim they might be up to no good, and now accuse and drag away people on a whim they might be mentally ill by authorities.

I can only comment on what I see. I don’t know much about the R v D thing in America. Only that it’s similar to our Liberal v Labor, sort of
Sorry but from the outside looking in the Pubs routinely seem to come across as anti freedom, anti free speech, anti workers rights and indeed anti intellectual/anti education
That’s not from folks telling me as such, just coming from their actions on the world stage. Again this is not based on their words or rhetoric, but their actual actions

NYC mayor’s new plan will allow involuntarily hospitalization of mentally ill people

If the state authorities thinks your mentality ill, your essentially going to 'jail'..

Welcome to the People's Republic of NY mental health program.

Wonderful!
Why do you use very real untruths? It's not "jail," it's assessment in a hospital. We've had that for many years in Ontario, where I live a physician who is concerned that a person's mental state may lead them to do harm to themselves or others can file a "Form One," which commits that person to a hospital for immediate evaluation by qualified medical psychiatrists. They can be detained for that evaluation for UP TO 72 hours (that's 3 days for those with a numeracy problem). The Form One filing must show that there is a finding of 1) very real danger to self or others, AND 2) that danger is caused by evidence of a real mental disorder.

The difference is they're actually hunting around for people to call mentally ill and round them up.

And how are they going to force them?

Taser them if they resist?

Beat them into submission if they resist?

Hog tie them if they resist?

Anyone who advocates this kind of 'care' is pretty damm sick themselves.

And if someone with an apparent mental health problem is roaming your neighbourhood, and the kids are playing street hockey down the block, what's your recommendation? Oh! I bet I know! It's get your gun and shoot them! That'll be world's better than tasering, right?

Don't give them ideas.

How about you tell us what you think should be done about some obvious problems -- and there are many. Here's one example:

A 22-year-old man, Tim McLean, on the evening of 30 July 2008 was stabbed, beheaded, and cannibalized while riding a Greyhound Canada bus along the Trans-Canada Highway, about 30 km (19 mi) west of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. His killer was a mentally unstable man named Vince Li, 40 years old. Li was eventually found not criminally responsible for murder and remanded to a high-security mental health facility in Selkirk, Manitoba, where he was detained until his release on 8 May 2015.

Tim McLean was just sleeping on the bus, so he didn't know his demise was imminent until the knife was already in his neck.

But what if his obvious mental problems had been deemed sufficient to keep him under some sort of control, rather than allowed to go freely wherever he wanted?

All I'm asking for is you considered wisdom about how to deal with what we know are real mental problems. I'm sure your answers will be most enlightening.

At my work a few years ago, there was a gentleman who, maybe suffering from the heat, idk, came in and demanded we call Dolly Parton to pick him up. He threatened a young girl at the front desk with a knife and demanded to speak to Elvis Presley as a delegate. I sincerely wish I was joking about all of that.
To be clear this was a highly unusual case. Surprised it didn’t make any tabloids, honestly. I mean it was over in a matter of minutes but still. Maybe the bloke had higher connections idk

@Twilight Hue Should the police who were called to the scene (and indeed were very close by, thankfully) have sent him to lock up/prison or sent him to a psychiatric facility to be assessed and maybe even held overnight for his own good, even against his will?
Just curious

In unrelated news several Congress members have stated they will not be going to NYC anytime soon.

I mean I wouldn’t either. But their reported living conditions, working conditions and healthcare conditions are enough to scare most people away (at least anyone outside the US who are accustomed to being treated like human beings)
Sorry, couldn’t resist lol ;):p

I've heard that the crazies in New York live underground and come up once a month when they run out of food.
