Depends.
1. What state it was in.
2. Was the person in the house.
3. Were you in life threatening danger.
4. Did you warn them.
5. Were they outside the window and turned to run and were shot in the back.
6. etc

The courts and lawyers would dipict many things.
the answer you were given is accurate if it had happened in my neck of the woods....

Was it? Do you know what their neck of the woods is like or just base everything off your neck of the woods? .
You left out a long list of details.
As evidenced by your long list of details in your post that starts with "Depends"

Not only that, but I for one do not expect people outside my neck of the woods to know all the pertaining laws in my neck of the woods.
Now perhaps if you present a hypothetical that includes enough details to get to the answer you are looking for...

I have just been scanning US supreme court rulings

it seems the practice of stopping a fleeing suspect has been......tethered

so......we may all well expect...
the burglar that just ran out from your house.....is free to go

yes he is
You'd rather the police officer had the measure of justice with his trigger finger?

It is time to stop digging.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
If she had her taser on the same side of her body as her firearm she could get in trouble.
That's something I had in mind when posting.

But even still, if it was in the proper place, can anyone think a 20 plus year veteran would be so daft as not to confuse left from right?

I see another court case building on the horizon.

Easy one. The homeowner would get off Scot free.
It depends upon the prosecutor.
Some are pro-armed self defense.
Some (where I live) are not.
Even if one is tried & found not guilty,
I wouldn't call this being "off scot free".

Note that the "S" in "scot" should not be capitalized.
(Nothing to do with Scotsmen or Dred Scott.)
The term, "scot", once meant a tax.
