stacy,

Generalities are as legitimate a way of viewing the world as individualities are. They're just two ways of viewing of the same reality. This particular discussion is about generalities, as it's about "whites" vs, "non-whites". And those are general terms that imply a cultural perspective. So I'm discussing them as generalities that imply a cultural perspective. That's what I took the thread to be about.

I'm also discussing them without an assumption of bigotry because I see no value in discussing them as bigotry. Bigotry is wrong. What else is there to say about that?

So I chose to pursue what I thought was a more productive aspect of the subject. That was the aspect of speaking truth to power in a cultural sense.

I would fail to see how that is a fault of anyone's. I also fail to see the logic here. Does this mean if I turn on my TV and 95% of the people are black, I get a lifetime pass for making jabs at blacks?

No you dont get a "pass" but its a little different when you are the minority. And you have been oppressed and descrimated against for centuries because you are white.(in this hypothetical)

I feel a "kinship"..Because I am a woman of any color.Doesnt give me a "free pass" to jab at men.But I understand the differnece..Between the "priveledged" majority and the birth of minority with newly recognized rights.

They are "generalities" IMH opinion because they are based in some "general" truths.

But even if 90% of asians drive bad, should you make fun of all asians for it? What about the 10% who drive really well? It's not really fair to them to be stereotyped just because some people of the same race don't drive very well.

Let me add something else though. You know the show "Family Guy" and "South Park." they make fun of every group. They stereotype everyone, so I think that's okay. I just don't like certain groups to be singled out. If you're joking around, go ahead and make fun of everyone, but don't just pick on one group, and don't make stereotypical generalizations in order to be mean.

Oh ok. It's a stereotype in my area that asians can't drive.

Its also a sterotype that women cant drive.

It came from somewhere.

Even though my(individual) driving record is better than the average males.

Its also a "sterotype" that Asians (in general) are better in math on average than any other race. What say you?

If you are going to have "stereotypes"..and "generalities" there needs to be a mix of good and ..ya know..not good..

What is a "good" white "stereotype" or "generality"?

Anyone??

Im sorry I lied..I couldnt not have at least a "little" secks with Will.
