"Oh my god, you're SO white."

So you're saying you can size up an individual and their cultural attitude merely by the color of their skin? And that they deserve to be the target of harassment and disrespect because of it? People have been called "so white" for liking certain genres of music. Do you consider having good tastes in real music a flaw of the majority? It's slightly disturbing and disgusting that you think being a part of a majority means you deserve to be the victim of bigotry.

Judging from your posts. It seems like you're being a little racist yourself, on top of being a little hypocritical. tsk, tsk. Shameful.
You're jumping to wild conclusions, both about me and about anyone who uses the term "white". Why don't you just ask them what they mean by it, instead of assuming that it must imply bigotry? I bet in most cases it doesn't imply bigotry at all.

Not unless they say it specifically, which is a different discussion. Otherwise you're just jumping to your own biased conclusions about why they are saying "you're so white".
But I don't think the intent has anything to do with you being reviled or disdained. I think it's an honest observation that white people in a white culture tend to be culturally myopic. It has nothing to do with dancing, or basketball. Those are biased stereotypes that YOU are injecting by assumption. When they call you "white", I think they are simply referring to that myopia - a kind of cultural ignorance born of being automatically part of a cultural majority.

No, no, dear. You're taking this way off into la-la land. I don't think I was too clear in the op so that's my fault but what I'm trying to discuss is how and why it's ok for someone to say "you're so white" when it is a direct result of seeing a white person either dance, play a sport, listen to a certain type of music, speak, etc.....

It has everything to do with these things. WHENEVER I have heard this jab, it's in the midst of watching a white person do SOMETHING that is considered dorky or not up to par or in the middle of listening to a white person speak with an extended vocabulary or a certain accent.

ALSO......what about in the op when I said I heard on the news: "...is the whitest sport..." and then he chuckled. ?! That has NOTHING to do with where you're trying to steer this.

Do you have any useful comments for what we're trying to discuss here?

But..it IS an insult when it's MEANT as an insult or a slight.
But that must be clarified, first, and then it becomes a different discussion
How is it "USUALLY petty or meant as an insult" when a white person says that to a non-white, but NOT petty or meant as an insult when a non-white says it to a white person?
That is quite the double-standard.
It's a different standard because the situation is different. One comment comes from experience while the other comes from ignorance.
Do you think that (for example) a black person, who grew up in a black neighborhood, went to a school where blacks were the majority, and works with mostly non-whites REALLY identifies with white culture?
I think they still know full well that they're in a minority enclave surrounded by a white majority. A white majority that runs things, and makes decisions for them in ignorance. The still see overwhelmingly white TV shows, and movies, and books, and newspapers, and policemen, and politicians, shop owners, and school officials, and employers, and ... well you get the idea.
No. Not any more than whites identify with black culture. Actually, to be honest, I've seen way more whites take on the black culture as their own than I have seen blacks take on the white culture.
This has nothing to do with taking on other cultures.
If you're saying that white people can't say "Oh, you're so black" on the grounds that white people don't know what being black is like because they're not black, didn't grow up as a minority, etc...THEN:
Black people can't say "Oh, you're so white" because they don't know what being white is like because they're not white and didn't grow up as a majority.
But they do know more about it. They're surrounded by white culture. They can't escape it. Whereas most white people have no idea about other cultures because they have no experience of them at all.
The argument goes both ways, sugar.
Reality is what it is. And it doesn't go "both ways". Majorities tend to overwhelm everyone else. Majorities tend to be myopic. That's just how it is. Minorities are keenly aware of this because they experience it every day. Majorities tend to be ignorant of it because they are surrounded by their own and so immune to their own effect.
Whites "live in the same world" non-whites do, too. Whites just "experience it differently" because they're not non-white. Your exact words apply to both sides of the coin.
It's not the "same coin". They are having different experiences, and they know different things as a result.
It sounds like you're trying to excuse bigotry by claiming pseudo-victimization. Which really isn't a very legitimate excuse.
There is no bigotry except what you've made up in your own mind, unless it has actually been expressed. And if it has actually been expressed, I think that's a different subject.
You can't excuse insults by saying "you don't know what it's like". I DO have some idea what it's like. My skin may be white, but my family is Venezuelan, among other things. And my half-siblings are mostly Mexican. You think we don't have to deal with BS from people too? Whites in Texas give hispanics, especially Mexicans, a horrible time. Not only that, but because my little sister and I are pale, the hispanics give us a hard time for looking white!
But that absolutely does not excuse insulting people based on their race. That's racism. Some people don't get that it's racist and wrong, no matter what color your skin is or what kind of bloodline you have. Being a minority doesn't mean you can be a prick and call it "ok".
None of this has anything to do with the discussion at hand, though.

Some of the reasons for saying "your so white" I cant see as an "insult. Some I can.But just in general it is a "stereo-type" which again is "lumping".But I believe some "not all" stereo types" are rooted in some "original" truth. They came from somewhere.

It's a different standard because the situation is different. One comment comes from experience while the other comes from ignorance.

Taking away the terms "majority" and "minority".....this doesn't matter. I don't know how else to say it...Individual to individual, it is a different life experience for everyone. It doesn't matter which group you fall into; everyone is dealt a different hand despite their race. You're going to have blacks who are very well-educated and wealthy and you're going to have asians who are poor and uneducated. You're going to have hispanics who are not well off at all and struggle every day and you're going to have whites who aren't exactly rich but are comfortable and can afford some luxuries. White, black, asian, hispanic, whatever....the chips never fall the same way. So to say that one group can make insensitive, racist comments toward another group because they've experienced a different way of life makes absolutely ZERO sense because, like I said earlier, there is no shortage of suffering for ANY race. All races get a crap hand. Perhaps because, oh?, it has to do with the individual and their unique living situation, NOT their race.

But they do know more about it. They're surrounded by white culture. They can't escape it.

Excuse me? How in the world does being surrounded by a culture equal knowing more about it? I can tell you one thing, it certainly doesn't equal knowing ENOUGH about it to criticize or insult it without consequence. No one has that privilege.

Whereas most white people have no idea about other cultures because they have no experience of them at all.

I've never been one to believe experience is a requirement for understanding.

Reality is what it is. And it doesn't go "both ways".

Uh, yes it does. Don't speak on reality's behalf when you don't seem to be showing the signs of a sane person.

It's not the "same coin". They are having different experiences, and they know different things as a result.

You're absolutely correct. They ARE having different experiences. Hellooo!! Hi! Yea, everyone is having a different experience. No one's world view is the same and everyone's truth is their own, no one else's. And once again, I'm failing to see how this is an excuse for making racist remarks.

The bottom line is, one shouldn't make stereotypical remarks about anyone. You shouldn't say someone is "acting asian," or "talking like they are black," or they "look jewish." None of those things make sense, because every single person is a unique individual. Not all asians act the same. not all black people talk the same. not all jewish people look the same. So just no one make any stereotypical generalizations. It doesn't matter if you are in the majority or minority of a race, religion, age, or gender. That gives you no right to make fun of a specific group. That's it. It's not an opinion. Just don't do it, okay? :D

(of course, I don't claim this is "right" or "wrong," because those are just terms made up by people, but in this society, I think people generally frown upon stereotypical generalizations, and if we are going to have all of these equality laws, everyone needs to follow them, not just the majority groups.)

But just take this..What if you turned on the t.v and 95% of the people on the T.V were black?

Oh ok. It's a stereotype in my area that asians can't drive. At all. So say if I get into a crash with someone of asian descent, you'd be ok with me saying to them, "GOD, you're SO asian" Because me saying that is a direct result of the crash and them not being able to drive, which is a stereotype that exists in northern virginia, and hey, it came from somewhere........

Comments like these hurt people's feelings. I would never say that kind of thing to anyone. It's hard to believe people feel it's ok to use it against whites because we somehow deserve it for existing as a majority, or that we should just sweep it under the rug because of our bad history with minorities. No race owes another race ANYTHING. It is TODAY, people! We are not our ancestors. There is no room for stuff like this anymore.

You also didn't answer my question about my scenario of the asian driver and me exclaiming, "you're so asian!" That's gotta be ok, right? I can get called out for dancing like a white girl, asians can get called out for driving like an asian. Right??
