It's called a paradox. And grown ups understand that behind what most simpletons call "the truth" what we really will find is paradox. The more you learn about a culture, the less you realize you know. Yet it's realizing your own ignorance that will finally open you up to really being able to interact with people from other cultures. This is the paradox.
And by "grown ups" you mean you, right? Thanks for calling me a simpleton, too.
I just don't know how to express what's wrong with this thought process by you. A culture is not like the universe. There are certain cultural practices and beliefs. You can learn them, and thereby understand the culture. By your logic, I could never understand "white culture" either.
What about the concept of generalizing don't you understand? Generally speaking, white people are culturally myopic because they are living in an overwhelming cultural majority (here in the U.S.). This says nothing about "all" white people. This says nothing about it being impossible for a white person not to be myopic. This says nothing about ANY SPECIFIC PERSON, period. It's a generality. It's speaking in general terms, and is positing a general observation/conclusion.
This is simply wrong. I am implying through my generalizations that MOST white people are culturally myopic. Not that all of them are.
It seems that it's you who doesn't understand the concept of generalizing. It's one thing to say that most white people are culturally myopic. It's another to say that white people are culturally myopic. You have been advocating that latter, not the former. You have also been advocating the idea that it's OK to say "You're so white" meaning "You're so culturally myopic". By advocating that, you're saying it's ok to make judgements about people solely based on their skin color. That's saying that whether or not you think all white people are culturally myopic, it's ok by you to judge them as such. And that's wrong.
You should have paid more attention to what I actually wrote, and less to what you imagined me to have said.
Maybe you should pay more attention to what you write, since you're the only one who seems to see it as you do. We can only guess at your meaning from what you wrote, and since several people here have guessed the same thing, you might want to admit that maybe you wrote it wrong.
So in a nutshell, racist bigotry is bad while religious bigotry is OK right?
Are you just trying to pick a fight here? That has nothing to do with what I said. What I said was he was being extremely blind to obvious information, just like creationists are. Creationists refuse to accept evolution despite the overwhelming evidence for it because it doesn't fit their worldview. PureX refuses to accept how the phrase "You're so white" is actually used by most people despite the vastly overwhelming evidence against him because it doesn't fit the way he wants the world to be.
So, in a nutshell, I was making no commentary on racist bigotry or religious bigotry at all.
Since your so superior to creationists, why don't you enlighten us all and tell us what caused the "big bang"?
I am only superior to creationists in one way, and that is that, at least when it comes to things like evolution, I don't let my bias cloud my vision.
I don't know what caused the big bang, but that is completely irrelevant to this discussion. If you have anything further to add, please make it relevant and not just a twisting of my words to suit your needs.
