Pascal's Wager?

allfoak

Alchemist
If everyone would just strive to live up to their highest potential there would be no need for Pascal's wager.

What in the world is the purpose in choosing a God anyway?
God chose me.
It is kind of like me thinking that i am a musician because i learned how to play the piano from a book.
A musician is not made from reading a book.
A musician is one who earns the title.

God is not chosen or learned about from some book.
When we begin to have the courage to learn who we are and start living our highest ideals, we then earn the title of child of God and That which is God, chooses us

Wager is an act that should include some consider to the odds.
It's not just you and God.

There are 7+billion copies of a learning device doing just that....learning.

With each breath you become more than you were a moment ago.....and to what end?
No one survives the last breath?
Billions of possible spirit.....and all fail to dust?

I think the odds are GREAT, that a few of us go on.

If I got a dollar for each time you mentioned 'spirit' and 'breath', I would be rich by now. Just sayin'.

You truly don't believe there are people who don't crave for an afterlife, isn't that right, Thief?

I fear you will never understand many, many people.

If you don't want to go....you most likely won't.

Shall the contrary of the wager be considered?

Let's just say you are certain.....there is nothing beyond your last breath.
Then it does seem a sure thing....for you.....

Most likely. Assuming, of course, that there even is such a thing as "going somewhere" after death, which I very much doubt.

Death is death.

There are probably several alternate contraries, the most logical being just calling it silly and disregarding it. Which do you propose?

Well there you go.
You have no dog in the fight......you have no dog.
Nothing to look forward to...and nothing waiting for you.

If you truly believe there is no wager.....why bother to speak?
kinda like standing around a poker table with no intent.
The participants will eventually get tired of you looking over their shoulders.

Or maybe it's like denouncing belief while standing in a church.

Would be kinda silly.....preaching disbelief to the choir.

Wonder what Pascal would say to the Agnostic?

For that's where I'm feeling most comfortable these days. A spiritual agnostic is there such a thing? ^_^

@Thief - not my place to judge you and while you most likely have good intentions, telling people they may find heaven if they do this or that isn't your place. No one knows with certainty if an after life exists or not. No matter what any "holy book" states.

Just my pov on that....

Yeah well.....a lack of discussion doesn't help.
Sure...I could hold my peace and say nothing.

But then later the angels might do the same to me.

(and I don't reason toward heaven because of a book)

You realize that this life is real, far as anyone can tell, while the afterlife is completely speculative?

Why do you insist on calling this life "nothing"?

I agree with you. I do believe in an afterlife but it is not on account of it being written in some book. It's based on what I consider convincing evidence from NDE's and reincarnation accounts.

I never said this life is nothing.
and I more than assume a next life.

I have spent my life in consideration of the next.
I lean to it.

But I follow no one and no one follows me.
I have no congregation.

No beads for your hand, no rug for your knees.
No ritual or ceremony...no sacrament.
No creed or pledge for you to make.
I have no dogmatic faith.

I see, labels are just labels but sounds like you are a deist.

I was once a theist so I understand why many believe in a higher power.
It brings comfort even if what you are seeking comfort from, turns out to be something imagined.
