While I'm so urged to defend gangsta rap (my husband and I listen to it and appreciate it), I'd like to put in another vote for penguino's generation. It really wasnt' all THAT long ago when Generation X-ers were teens and described in all the same adorable terms that penguino's peers hear. Before us, it was the baby boomers. Before the baby boomers, it was the "beat" generation with Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and like. There was the "silent" generation where the teenage rebellion shocked parents with Bill Haley and the Comets, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman (oh the horror!). Don't forget the Roaring Twenties when the flappers and jazz music ruined our civilization.

Teens haven't changed all that much. They're still brimming with creativity, potential, and fresh insight into our priorities.

Peace,
Mystic

Bud, you need to get over the idea that he's attacked you personally because he's happened to mention something you happen to enjoy listening to by way of an example. I happen to work with someone who thinks anyone who gets on a motorbike is insane on some level. I plan to get a motorbike in the near future, but I'm not there beating him over the head with the fact I'm clearly not insane and shouldn't be lumped in with - as the original post described it - the 'stupid' (who I also work with), who decided that it was a good idea to get a high powered bike he can't legally ride and then ride it without any form of protection. Why am I not up in arms? Because in the case of that guy I happen to agree with him, and in the past I've kown other equally stupid people riding motorbikes.

Personally attacked me? Where did you get that from? I know he hasn't. It annoys me, how people have a set steretype about that sort of music. Gangster rap is something important to me, just like any other music will be important to someone else, i would do all i can to defend its name.

Yeah, theres a constant one-upmanship in TV and movies/music/etc. Everyones gotta top the last big thing, be the biggest box office smash, the grossest horror film, show the most T&A, plus the "Politically Correct" comment was right on--the world is becoming morally grey and ambiguous, who do kids model themselves after when the biggest star is in rehab at age 13? So if you maintain a moral sphere for those youngsters to enjoy they will remember and thank you for it later, because in their hearts everyone wants to be good/do good, but they need a role model--someone to look to as an example upon which to pattern themselves. In a morally grey/ambiguous world that is a tall order sometimes!

The generation gap perseveres
It's so odd to find yourself on the other side of it, though. A few years ago a friend and I were criticizing the way teenagers dressed, and all of a sudden we realized what we were doing and we both got embarrassed at the same time. "Wow! When did that happen?" Since then, I try to watch myself -- although I still maintain that if you're eating fast food you should go in the daytime when the old ladies are working. ;)

There are some who do certain things just because their peers say that it is the "cool" thing to do (or whatever word they use now). If someone likes a type of music or a movie just because their peers like it, do they really like it?

Gansta Rap can be used for good-- it can show what can happen if you choose the wrong path. Penguino seems more interested in the beat and rhythm than of the lyrics of it (you can correct me if I am wrong). My son does not even understand what some of the rap songs he listens to are saying (but as I said, he is special needs). I don't think any kind of music can undo the values your parents have taught you and if it does then and only then should someone not listen to it.

That is the very point. It cant undo it, music is not your mum and dad. Music is just there, for pleasure, to listen to and nothing else.

My mistake...generally someone who so diligently ignores what the post was actually saying and instead focus on a small part of it, starting with the rebuttal of,'But I do A, and I'm nothing at all like B, so you're wrong...' and follow on with further rebuttals that appear to misinterpret the attempted clarification of the intent of the original post, has taken something personally. If you merely felt compelled to do the above in defence of a form of music, well, I'm sure the artists in question appreciate your heartfelt support.
There are, however, some very sad individuals who have committed crimes and claimed to have been inspired by this music. Obviously they'd have found something else to be 'inspired' by had it not existed...Ozzie Osbourne maybe, Aliester Crowley, some movie depiction of Satanism that involved sacrificing babies, who the hell knows. That doesn't prove the music is bad of itself, it does however illustrate the point being made, that there are cretins out there who will hear something and go...'Ooh, that sounds like a brilliant idea, I'll do that now!'
Unfortunately, because you can't legislate against stupidity, when people get up in arms looking for a scapegoat, it's something essentially innocuous like a style of music that gets blamed.

I don't like gansta rap; it's one of the few kinds of music I don't like. But if it comes to that, I was brought up listening to Johnny Cash. Have you ever listened to "Delia's Gone"?
Delia, oh, Delia
Delia all my life
If I hadna shot poor Delia
I'd have had her for my wife
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

I went up to Memphis
And I met Delia there
Found her in her parlor
And I tied to her chair
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

She was low down and trifling
And she was cold and mean
Kind of evil make me
Want to grab my sub machine
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

First time I shot her
I shot her in the side
Hard to watch her suffer
But with the second shot she died
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

Jailer, oh, jailer
Jailer, I can't sleep
'Cause all around my bed
I hear the patter of Delia's feet
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

So if your woman's devilish
You can let her run
Or you can bring her down
and do her like Delia got done
Delia's gone, one more round
Delia's gone

While I applaud your attitude, who is to say that your state of mind, goals, and intentions are the best for society?

I'm not saying that I know what is best for society, I'm saying I have an idea, which is why I would never do anything unless I had a tremedous amount of support, of which I'm not willing to gather right now. I agree with whole whole "anti-stupid" movement, it pretty much sums it up. Without stupid people and greedy minded criminals of the sorts, society would be a better place.

And as far as the gangsta rap thing, I listen to it sometimes, it makes for good club dancing, and "actin a fool". I don't seriously enjoy it though, I don't go out and buy chains down the my knee's, rock a white tee down to my knees, and try to be a current day thug because that's all those guys do on the music videos. It's people who take music too literally, people's who actions are easily influenced. Whether it's gangsta rap or death metal, or anything that usually carries a negative connotation (sp?). These people can fall into the "stupid" category. I went to a party in delaware the other day (maybe month ago) with my girlfriend, which is one of the reasons I made this thread. I had about ten friends there maybe, we are all cool chill people. But I'd say about 70% of the people there were these fake *** wannabe gangstas (they were all 17-22ish), and I'm not usually one to judge a book by it's cover. Within two hours, you would not believe that things that occured. Keep in mind there is about 50 people at this party, and imagine having 6-8 people in 3 different rooms just going crazy fighting eachother, like 5 vs 2, etc. Before I know it people start taking out guns and chasing eachother. I remember we all ran outside and hid in the woods, and we saw this one dude chasing three people with a shot gun shooting it off in the sky. Needless the say, there is too many of these people these days. I know most of society is good hearted and kind spirited, but the amount of greedy criminals and idiots is getting to be too large of a number.

Im a 40 year old stay at home mom who went through a stage where Em and Em was my favorite thing to listen to.(

I can get down to some em and dre, and some other rap. I prefer hip-hop to rap, it's more like poetry with soothing beats, made by black guys who have something they want to get off their chest, and that's awesome, because it's real. I'm mostly a classic rock and rock guy myself.

Another thing I'd like to mention, is the younger girls these days. Have you seen the types of clothes it takes to be hip? If I had a daughter she would hate me, because I would never let her wear half the things all the teenagers do. All the girls see paris hilton, britteny spears, all these celebrities on television, and they want to be just like them. All these superstars are influencing these younger girls nearly 100%. Then you got people like 50 cent, FLO RIDA, and all kinds of other clowns talkin about how they be pimpin dem hos, and gettin that loot. They have big gold chains and half naked women next to them. What do younger males think? Maybe subconciously, but they think, damn! I wanna get laid! I wanna get rich!

Children used to look up to their father or mother, the parents used to be role models, I have a feeling superstars and people on television are starting to become a lot of kids role models instead.

It doesn't matter because there is nothing we can do about it, right? We might as well kick back and enjoy what little time we have left.

Yup, for the most part, that's what I'm doing at least. All I can do is influence those around me, which I have. If something big happens that could potentially change how things are, I'll definitely be on that wagon.

I get that point very well (the lyrics to Delia, that is. I love Johnny Cash). I also listen to a song called Hey, Joe by Jimi Hendrix about a man who wants to shoot his woman down because she is cheating on him. ;) And let's not forget the song Alone Again, Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan about a guy who wants to commit suicide after his girl left him. :)

But when i listen to music, i listen to lyric, but it doesent even sub-conciously plant in my brain, i think (at a young age) children may need to be educated about thinks they see or hear.

Yes, because you're an intelligent person. The problem I seem to see is that kids are getting dumber as time goes on. They are getting book smarter (lol) but as far as everything else they are lacking. My little brother is a genius, gets straight A's, has not a clue how to properly socialize, is disrespectful, thinks he is the coolest kid on the block, and knows everything. We are good friends and get along great, but that's only because I'm his older brother, I'd have to kick his arse otherwise.
