Photogallery: Lebanon now

So often, once the war is over, the media cameras leave and no one ever really pays much attention to the suffering, to the hope, to the failures, and to the successes that take place in the aftermath of such brutality.

Here I'm going to share some photographs taken in Lebanon since the cease fire came into effect.

A few Americans might not like the picture on the top right......seems to me that the USA references should be erased and "See What You Did Hezbollah" added perhaps?

Well, they can put their head in the sand if they wish. The truth, regardless of what that might be, matters little. Polls have shown the Lebanese are done blaming Israel for these wars. All the signs, etc... I haven't seen them mention Israel in anger once. It's all being directed against the United States now, for refusing to allow the cease fire immediately, for supplying Israel with the carpet bombs and other weapons they used, and - of course - the Israeli-Palestinian war.

Especially the Christians. I read an article in the Christian Science Monitor about the priests in northern Lebanon and their anti-US sermons since the war.

I understand this sentiment you explain, Djamila...but in all honesty I have to say this scewed thinking causes me to sympathize less with Arabs/Muslims. I don't think I'm alone, sorry.

It's the same with me, in reverse. To me, blaming Lebanon - and to a less strong, but similar extent Hezbollah - is identical to blaming a woman for being raped.

like it or not, the united states stalled and stalled on a cease-fire. one which would have saved lives, many lives.

"oh, we can't have a cease-fire! that would make us look like wimps! no, go ahead Israel. keep bombing the bejeezus out of innocents and we'll keep similing stupidly encouraging the violence."

the u.s. could have really put its foot down and said "ok, this needs to stop". did it? no.

I just can't believe they put a rush order on a shipment of questionable weaponry to Israel, gracie - that's the only part that bothers me. They're still clearing away the unexploded carpet bombs from southern Lebanon, and will probably be doing so for years if Bosnia is any indication. We still have more landmines in Sarajevo than people, 10 years and millions of dollars later.

And the American media was good to us. When three girls were killed by a landmine in their school's playground in Sarajevo a few years ago, the American media told it like it was.

When the same thing happened in Palestine, the Americans said the four boys killed "kicked unexploded ordinance". The European media, though, told it as it was. They interviewed the Israeli military asking why an improvised landmine was placed in a Palestinian schoolyard. The official being questioned admitted it was a bomb and it was placed by the Israelis and promised to "investigate" why it was placed there. Even then the American media said nothing of it.

That sort of bias just makes me crazy. And then you see on their news, "Well, people are saying President Bush should get more involved in the conflict in the Middle East" - oh go **** yourselves, you ********. You couldn't be more involved, not for peace but for supporting a single side, if you wanted to. The only thing you could do more is admit what you're already doing.

But that's fine. People can believe that completely destroying an entire country, killing hundreds of civilians, and making hundreds of thousands homeless is an appropriate response to the kidnapping of two soldiers, even if it is illegal.

I just hope they're able to stomach it when Israel begins to get such responses from Arab states in the name of self-defense. Because it will happen. As the Palestinians say: The Romans came and went, the Ottomans came and went, the Europeans came and went... the only thing that has remained constant, is us.

Djamila- the total lack of concern for those on the receiving end of Israel's bombs is just shocking. as is the lack of concern for Iraqi casualties, Guantanamo inmates, the list goes on and on.

the u.s. claims it wants a "culture of life" within its borders. how can anyone have a culture of life or be proud of themselves when their governemnt and their apathy is causing millions to suffer violence, grief, loss, trauma, and fear? i really don't understand taht at all.
