Would you like to see fewer to no more threads about this topic on RF?

I'm tired of it, many are, and @rocala has had issues and has documented them in his latest thread where he may opt to leave.

Would you prefer not to see such threads?

Does it detract from your RF experience?

Fewer. Maybe we could have a very specific section for Biden vs. Trump threads. It's not that I am not occasionally up for a bit of political "discourse". Just recently it is sometimes headache inducing. Like it's stinking up my religious experience. And it seems to have this nagging pull I have a hard time escaping. As the election approaches it appears that's all the RF will become.

I voted that I would prefer to see no politics at all on a forum dedicated to religion, but I understand that's not a realistic expectation.

Ideally, if we are going to have political forums that include threads that surround a presidential election, there should be a feature where those who don't want to see them can opt out...or where those that want to see them can opt in.

I like discussing political philosophy and looking at societal issues on a deeper level, although I've noticed a tendency towards what might be called political gossip and mudslinging on a superficial level, which gets much more attention.

Also, I've noticed a tendency for some posters to start new threads each time there's a new development, or sometimes multiple posters post new threads about the same basic topic. I don't see that there's a need to start new threads every day when it's basically the same topic in numerous threads.

This is my main gripe.

When Brexit happened Brits had one main thread we tended to use.

Every time Trump farts there's a thread about it by 10 people.

My view is that there are better forums to talk politics. Why do it here? Either that or we change the name of the forum to 'Religion and American Politics'. But this topic does beg the question ... How many former members have left these forums quietly for this very reason? Many people leave quietly.

I don't care for all the politics threads

But I would never leave here because of them

They are easy to ignore

Although yes, I think there are too many of them especially for a forum that is about religion

So I would like to see less of them but wouldn't forbid them were it up to me

That is an absurdly worded poll. What the hell does Trump/Biden/etc. include:
  • ... Israel-Gaza?
  • ... vaccine efficacy?
  • ... evolution?
  • ... climate change?
  • ... reproductive rights?
  • ... AI threats?
  • ... favorite music?
  • ... and, God forbid, The Last Post id the Winner?

You could have asked nicely and I would have responded nicely.

Bit late now.

I'd be fine if political discourse and debate is omitted and or eliminated.

I find religious philosophy and thought much more interesting than talking about extremely wealthy people and their power drama soap opera antics.

The forum also has whole sub-forums dedicated to entertainment, philosophy, psychology, the arts, the living world and so on. Thus, while there is a substantial focus on religion, we seem to be open to other topics. And what a bore it would be to have to belong to 20 forums in order to talk about 20 subjects that you find interesting! Perhaps there are those who don't ever want to discuss anything but their personal beliefs, but most people, I think, would pretty quickly find that snore-inducing.

Politics is an important part of life -- and religion, like it or not, plays an important role, even though the U.S. Constitution makes a deliberate effort to keep it out. And it is election season, in a very important country in the world, and this election could spell enormous changes not only in the U.S. but world-wide, and that makes it a topic of some moment and interest.

We saw this in 2015, as I recall, and the same complaint was raised then -- some members don't want to discuss politics, and felt that therefore NO members should want to discuss politics. I've always thoiught there was a solution to that -- stay out of the Political Discussions forum. I never visit the Discuss Individual Religions forum for the simple reason that I'm not interested. It doesn't bother me how much other people post in them, and I'm perfectly content to let the prattle on about whatever takes their fancy -- I just ignore it.

Isn't it possible to do that with politics, too?

Which is odd, considering that the Political Discussions Forum is the smallest of the four main topical forums. The largest, by the way, is "Everything but the Kitchen Sink," which I dont think is particularly religious.

This subforum isn't giving us no end of headaches, though.

As I mentioned elsewhere, those of us who 'surf' the forum using the 'new posts' feature to see the most recent posts find themselves having to week through the political threads in order to find threads they want to read or participate in.

I think the 'opt-in/out' suggestion that I mentioned in my first post ITT would be an equitable solution. Do you see a downside to members having the ability to opt out of seeing political forums? Or having members who are interested in reading and discussing politics having the ability to opt in?

Ignoring the stuff I'm not intested in doesn't give me a headache. Like I said, DIR is the second largest forum, and I pay it no mind at all.
I mean for moderation. It's a massive unnecessary pain.

Someone has to clean up, individually, all those posts on those threads that get out of hand.

Which is often all of them.
