"Pope suggests it's better to be an atheist than a bad Christian"

Man, when someone actually tries being Christlike, it's like a lot of Christians suddenly want to discredit that person, as if they themselves are ashamed of how they've acted and instead of bettering themselves, double-down on their hate..

I don't know, just reminds me of Obama's apology tour, why here, why now. It seems out of place and such a generalization, it comes across as only kissing bottoms to unite the world in a one world government with the Vatican at the helm.

You sure that aluminum foil hat isn't a little too tight there, dear?

Oh, enough with these wacky conspiracy fantasies. As if empty gestures are going to have the whole globe convert to catholicism en masse on a whim. Do you really think it has that level of appeal or influence?

He don't want you to convert, He just want's to rule over you.

What does this bizarre non sequitur have to do with The Church apologizing for its mistakes and misdeeds?

So as they become more apparent as leaders of the world, people don't reject them for their past deeds, burning heretics etc. Lets say he was going to be the "Moral authority": of a whole world like Sodom and Gamorrah. He wouldn't want to publicly denounce sin.

But the modern, civilized world has no use for a "moral authority". All one needs is reason and compassion.

Pope: It's better to be an atheist than a bad Christian - CNN.com

What do you think? Is it better to be an atheist than a bad Christian?

And do you think the Church should apologize as the Pope suggest?
I've been pretty good with the stances on a lot of things with this pope. I agree here too though some would suggest you can believe your way out of it when the end comes.

Yes

I'm not a Catholic, nor do I know the entire context for which he should or shouldn't be apologising.
Adrian I am more familiar here on this topic. There is an extremist aspect in christianity like we are right you are wrong. He recognizes people not ideas about people. Not unlike you and I and others. He is trying to move the church past it's long long history of acedemic philosophy and debates which interestingly this little spot is very reflective of. Atheists do have some things right for sure, but they are a bit hamstrung by the church itself as well. They believe they are separate but that comes into direct ideas of interconnectedness "family of god" as st FrAncis stated in 1200 ad as much as science itself says all life is really one family identical stated sighty differently and ultimately used in all kinds of wierd ways to shore up personal philosophies. This is a rather interesting shift and important. You won't see him being an atheist he is obviously way too numinous for that. Btw the first pope in history to undergrad in science!! B.S. in chemistry.

In context, yes. There are many atheists who do not lead a double life; and, the pope was emphasizing that it's better to not lead a double life as a non-christian than leading a double-life as a christian.

I agree.
He definitely is trying to get the church past it's stone throwing. BTW did you hear his statement on women in the priesthood? He stated women will never be priests!!!! Wow he really understands women. If you want to cause women to make something happen just tell them they can't!!!. He has placed that burden on the women to make it happen not on the men to make it happen. Even though the comment may grate on women that's the intent. The funny part in his home area in Argentina all the women just love him to pieces. What we get with him as the pope is very thought out and a very attuned. Something popes aren't at all historically. ST. Therese is one of his very favorites!! I am not a Catholic but I spend a number of days each year at the national sanctuary called the grotto of OSM (Our sorrowful Mother. ) in Portland oregon. I am like John Muir my view is of the landscape and thus mother nature. And right now she looks very sorrowful. If you are ever in Portland it's a must visit. I will even give a tour if asked !!! Love that place.
