They took and tortured hostages, flogged, and raped the natives, burned recalcitrant villages, and took human hands as trophies (they required soldiers to submit one hand for every bullet spent) on the orders of white officers to show that bullets hadn't been wasted and soldiers were paid their bonuses on the basis of how many hands they collected.
