I understand your point. My point is that that is a completely different situation. In point of fact, exposure to the things people fear is a good way to help them overcome the fears, but of course, it needs to be done in certain ways.
So "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" is an expression of love and concern for Muslims? I find that hard to believe.

Anyway, the point is that we all have hang-ups. We all have things that we don't like or offend us personally. That doesn't mean others should walk on eggshells around us, though. It's a diverse world. You have to learn to accept that others don't share all of your values.
Not going out of your way to deliberately **** people off is hardly "walking on eggshells".

I asserted no such thing. Please refrain from telling lies about what I've said.
Looks like I mixed you up with Father Heathen. My mistake.

I for one will never stop speaking my mind to accommodate some peoples fragile sensibilities.

You know absolutely nothing about what I would or would not do or say in real life,

I can read people pretty well.

so you can keep your smug little backhanded bs comments to yourself, thanks.

LOL! Just speaking my mind man. Sorry if that messes with your fragile sensibilities. ;)

They wouldn't be Islamic which is the point I'm trying to make but you can't seem to get your head around that. Again, you are trying to ascribe things to the faith that are not the case!

Tanuki because I've seen Islamic icons and pictures of the Prophet

Let's assume there is icons of Muhammad, what do you think it means?

If you mean because they are from Muslims, well actually that is another issue.

My point of criticism is not the drawings in itself, it is doing it just for the sake of proving that you can do what you want and that no body can stop you.

That doesn't seem like a great way to react to such problems.

Badran do you also think respectful icons of the Prophet are against Islam then? Like some Muslim artists used to make?

Well, i'll admit this part i was never able to make my mind upon. It could seem that there is nothing wrong with that. But to be honest i'm not really sure about this part.

The making of such an image of the Prophet (SAW) is forbidden, and so regardless of what the makers of such images would claim they are not Muslim. The reason being that no Muslim, out of respect for the Prophet (SAW), would make such an image.

There is nothing wrong with speaking up your mind.

What i think is wrong is to do all this, just to prove to Muslims that they can't oppress you. You don't need to prove that to anyone.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you necessarily... but is there a better way to go about doing this?

I feel like there's a societal taboo on depicting the prophet for fear of offending sensibilities that may eventually have violent consequences. This isn't an unfounded fear, as was made evident by the violence that erupted as a response to the Danish cartoons a few years back.

As a US citizen, I take my freedom of speech/expression very seriously, and am vehemently opposed to anyone telling me what I can and can't say/express. I know I don't need to prove anything to anyone... but when a major television network (comedy central) won't air a harmless depiction of the prophet out of fear (a la southpark), then I think you're going to see a societal backlash. If we continue to be afraid to depict him, then we are in essence capitulating to the demands of those who threaten us with violence.

What I'd like to know is, how else are we supposed to respond to this? Act as if nothing is going on and continue to give Islam special treatment out of fear?

Badran what do you make of some of the icons I presented earlier in this thread of Jesus and Muhammad that are clearly Islamic icons?

I don't think we should baby them, they certainly don't baby anyone else. The fact that people are hypocritical enough to think that we need to conform ourselves to the social norms of a faith we don't believe in is pathetic. If someone doesn't believe in your god, then suck it up and get on with life because threats and such aren't going to convert them or make them stop and if they are insulting your god then as a believer you should have faith that your god will take action he/she deems appropriate to the situation. Do I agree with making casual slights about religion? No, I think its hurtful and offensive to anyone from any religion, but I don't think we should restrict people from saying what they want about religion or religious figures.

Evidently not, as you are way off base here. I have absolutely no problem. expressing my POV in any medium including face to face. I can only assume you are projecting your own sense of cowardice my way. You may want to work on that. ;)

LOL! You're right: I do sense cowardice your way.
