Great work!

Sunstone writes: I love your drawings!

Michel writes: As do I; all great pieces of work; I have them backed up here, on my hard drive and on the Newsletter website.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and support but don’t forget, the new “RFfiliates” strips can only be seen in the cyber-pages of our very own RF Newsletter twice a month. If it is a week that I have off, feel free to review all of the interesting and informative contributions that everyone is devoting to make this one of the greatest Newsletters entirely dedicated to our online community.

(RFfiliates #7 a.k.a Castle Sunstone-Originally presented in the September 21st Newsletter)

REFLECTIONS: In the world of “RFfiliates”, reputation rules. When I decided to feature Sunstone in his own strip, I had to make sure he was taking the lead in frubals. Now, we make light of frubals on the forum boards but I wanted to create a sense of obsession, wealth and worth to these mysterious flowers, which was why I decorated the side of the comic with them. In real life, Todd may be the owner of Religious Forums but what if frubal ownership and popularity reigned over the RFfiliate kingdom? Who would be king? Naturally, it would have to be Sunstone.

I admit I really enjoyed myself on this one. This strip had a strong cast and included the creative collaboration efforts between two RF members that later became a new character called Anonymouse. This was a great opportunity to pick on Sunstone’s eccentricities and blend his charisma to his avatar. The idea to put Sunstone in a tuxedo was to show that even though he was an ineffective tyrant dragon (which is why he needed Todd), he was still a class act. Someday I would like to return to this character but only if I can find a situation that could top the original.

(RFfiliates #8 Originally presented in the September 28th Newsletter)

REFLECTIONS: Sometimes I get these great ideas for RFfiliate strips but truth be told, I am unrealistically dependant on our community to maintain their avatars. Nothing is more distressful than finding the right avatars for an RF strip, mulling an idea around till it is done cooking and serving it piping hot in the week’s newsletters. The avatars in essence is what gives RFfiliates identity, is what makes playing around with the characters so much fun and if it is about a member who holds on to a good avatar it is what gives the strips their longevity. There is also an element of comedy that I try to incorporate into the strip just in case if the member’s avatar changes the strip can still be enjoyed from let’s say, a guest or a newbie who may not know anything about the avatars that I represented. There are two things that I think that you should know about this strip.

1. This strip was done with ease after the soul-draining comic classic Castle Sunstone. After that strip, I needed some down time and this opportunity presented itself in quite a timely fashion.
It is a behind the scenes story of what could have been. I was indeed planning to go through with the drawing before these comical circumstances occurred.

2. There is indeed a style of comic called a “fumetti” which translated means photo-comics and are popular in Italy and despite what you have heard lately, is a valid art form.

A big hand goes to Michel for assembling the fumetti into a slide show. Not only was it a professional touch but actually made for a natural read.

Hahaha! That was freaking hilarious! Well, no worries about me, because I found the Avatar I'm sticking with. =P
You had me worried during November 23rd's RFfiliates though. I wanted to draw your current robot avatar than you traded that with the bug alien avatar. No matter how large I would try to blow the bug alien picture up it was too small to get any detail. Then I got concerned thinking, well I how am I going to put jmoum in the strip if I can't see his avatar to draw it. Then you changed it back to the robot and I sighed in relief. The only concerns I had was trying to draw it in different perspectives but at least it was large enough to work with.

They are showing up on this end. Anyone else having trouble? The only thing I can think of is that Yahoo Geocities is having difficulties or I have maxed out my limit and should do some file managing.

RFfilates FAQ

Where did the idea for RFfiliates come from?

Michel, definitely Michel. Michel PMed me one day and asked me if I could do a cartoon strip for the weekly newsletter. At first I was confused about what kind of comic I could do for a religious forum without offering my personal opinions about religion or trying to think of things that were humorous about religion without offending others but when Michel described that he wanted it something along the lines of Peanuts, right then I knew exactly what he was going for and I knew exactly what Universe the RFfiliate characters would occupy.

Castle Sunstone was brilliant, do you plan on doing another strip with the Sunstone character?

Yes the Sunstone character did generate positive responses and may be used again.

You used my avatar once for one of your strips, I don’t act like that, who do you think you are? I should sue you for slander!

Whoa, hold on there. Just calm down. Your character as represented in RFfiliates, is a combination of the image you embody, by how much I know about you and what your purpose could be in regard to the RFfiliates universe. It’s that simple. RFfiliates is supposed to be fun and anyone who does not want me using them in an up and coming strip can just PM me.

What are the qualifications that you go by when casting characters for your strip?

They must have a working avatar or an avatar that I can work with. I try to work with members who do not seem to change their avatars because if one rereads the strips they become timeless. It is difficult but not impossible to work with people who have symbols or icons as their avatars but I do enjoy working with characters the most.

So what if someone changes their avatar?

I try to put enough comedy elements in the strip that if someone wants to revisit it, even if someone does not recognize the RF character, they could still get something out of the strip. It is a precarious balancing act.

Um-yeah, when do you think-um that you will do this other strip of Suntone?

Someday.

Buttons has been featured the most in your strips. How come you use Buttons all the time?

The Panda is kooky.

How come you do not give Buttons any speaking roles?

Two reasons, one, because then I would have to pay her and two, because Pandas don’t talk silly.

How long does it take you to do a strip and what is the cost of such an endeavor?

There are currently 42 employees working diligently around the clock to insure that each and every strip lives up to the high quality standards that Religious Forums represents. It begins with the round table discussion, where 15 writers toss ideas around. This could take all day and no one leaves until we have secured the comedic and artistic value that you have come to know twice a month. Then it is off to the drawing tables, where artists flesh out storyboards which are posted to discuss which scenes work and which ones don’t. The pages are first penciled, then inked and then sent off to a professional, expensive computer lettering program where the word balloons are positioned and words inserted. Mrscardero then receives the proofs and edits them with a thick red marker, then its back to the drawing board to fix any mistakes. It takes 2 weeks to complete the strips that are 4-6 panels and over a month to do the strips that are 6-12 panels at a cost of about $1500-$3500 per strip. It’s okay though, Todd picks up the bill.

How come RFfiliates isn’t in color?

Nobody has come forward and offered to produce the files in color, time would be a factor, I also enjoy working in black and white and I am trying to keep the costs down for Todd.

Can anyone submit comic ideas, stories, drawings to RFfiliates?

Yes! Yes! Yes! I highly recommend that if anyone has any ideas, to submit them to me in care of the RFfiliates strip. I collaborate very well with other people, so if you are just a writer, I can supply the pictures. If anyone has any ideas don’t hesitate to pipe in, this strip is for everyone on RF and besides, why should I have all the fun?

What is the most difficult part about putting out RFfiliates?

Meeting the deadlines, knowing when to end the strip, making the strip accessible to everyone and representing the characters I use fairly without worry of offending anyone or crossing the line. Figuring out exactly what I can get away with, creating a believable universe, trying to adjust the strip with all the avatars people have and understanding that these could change any day.

When you do decide to do the next Sunstone strip is there any wa-

Does anyone have anymore questions about RFfiliates that don’t involve Sunstone?

How long will you do RFfiliates?

Right now I am religiously bound by contract for a year but I will stop doing RFfiliates if:
a) there is no longer a need for it (which only RF members can decide)
b) I do not have the time to do it (which most likely will be the top reason)
c) I no longer enjoy or have fun doing it (which doesn’t seem likely).

How as a Religious Forum member, can I prevent the cancellation of RFfiliates?

Support your local forum newsletter. There is a lot of hard work that goes into making the newsletter our own informative corner of the forum. Contribute to it, support it, recommend it to other RF members, read it, offer ideas, suggestions and feedback. The newsletter is really a great idea and since it is about RF members, each and everyone one of us should do our part to continually share our thoughts and talents towards it.
