RFfilates FAQ
Where did the idea for RFfiliates come from?
Michel, definitely Michel. Michel PMed me one day and asked me if I could do a cartoon strip for the weekly newsletter. At first I was confused about what kind of comic I could do for a religious forum without offering my personal opinions about religion or trying to think of things that were humorous about religion without offending others but when Michel described that he wanted it something along the lines of Peanuts, right then I knew exactly what he was going for and I knew exactly what Universe the RFfiliate characters would occupy.
Castle Sunstone was brilliant, do you plan on doing another strip with the Sunstone character?
Yes the Sunstone character did generate positive responses and may be used again.
You used my avatar once for one of your strips, I dont act like that, who do you think you are? I should sue you for slander!
Whoa, hold on there. Just calm down. Your character as represented in RFfiliates, is a combination of the image you embody, by how much I know about you and what your purpose could be in regard to the RFfiliates universe. Its that simple. RFfiliates is supposed to be fun and anyone who does not want me using them in an up and coming strip can just PM me.
What are the qualifications that you go by when casting characters for your strip?
They must have a working avatar or an avatar that I can work with. I try to work with members who do not seem to change their avatars because if one rereads the strips they become timeless. It is difficult but not impossible to work with people who have symbols or icons as their avatars but I do enjoy working with characters the most.
So what if someone changes their avatar?
I try to put enough comedy elements in the strip that if someone wants to revisit it, even if someone does not recognize the RF character, they could still get something out of the strip. It is a precarious balancing act.
Um-yeah, when do you think-um that you will do this other strip of Suntone?
Someday.
Buttons has been featured the most in your strips. How come you use Buttons all the time?
The Panda is kooky.
How come you do not give Buttons any speaking roles?
Two reasons, one, because then I would have to pay her and two, because Pandas dont talk silly.
How long does it take you to do a strip and what is the cost of such an endeavor?
There are currently 42 employees working diligently around the clock to insure that each and every strip lives up to the high quality standards that Religious Forums represents. It begins with the round table discussion, where 15 writers toss ideas around. This could take all day and no one leaves until we have secured the comedic and artistic value that you have come to know twice a month. Then it is off to the drawing tables, where artists flesh out storyboards which are posted to discuss which scenes work and which ones dont. The pages are first penciled, then inked and then sent off to a professional, expensive computer lettering program where the word balloons are positioned and words inserted. Mrscardero then receives the proofs and edits them with a thick red marker, then its back to the drawing board to fix any mistakes. It takes 2 weeks to complete the strips that are 4-6 panels and over a month to do the strips that are 6-12 panels at a cost of about $1500-$3500 per strip. Its okay though, Todd picks up the bill.
How come RFfiliates isnt in color?
Nobody has come forward and offered to produce the files in color, time would be a factor, I also enjoy working in black and white and I am trying to keep the costs down for Todd.
Can anyone submit comic ideas, stories, drawings to RFfiliates?
Yes! Yes! Yes! I highly recommend that if anyone has any ideas, to submit them to me in care of the RFfiliates strip. I collaborate very well with other people, so if you are just a writer, I can supply the pictures. If anyone has any ideas dont hesitate to pipe in, this strip is for everyone on RF and besides, why should I have all the fun?
What is the most difficult part about putting out RFfiliates?
Meeting the deadlines, knowing when to end the strip, making the strip accessible to everyone and representing the characters I use fairly without worry of offending anyone or crossing the line. Figuring out exactly what I can get away with, creating a believable universe, trying to adjust the strip with all the avatars people have and understanding that these could change any day.
When you do decide to do the next Sunstone strip is there any wa-
Does anyone have anymore questions about RFfiliates that dont involve Sunstone?
How long will you do RFfiliates?
Right now I am religiously bound by contract for a year but I will stop doing RFfiliates if:
a) there is no longer a need for it (which only RF members can decide)
b) I do not have the time to do it (which most likely will be the top reason)
c) I no longer enjoy or have fun doing it (which doesnt seem likely).
How as a Religious Forum member, can I prevent the cancellation of RFfiliates?
Support your local forum newsletter. There is a lot of hard work that goes into making the newsletter our own informative corner of the forum. Contribute to it, support it, recommend it to other RF members, read it, offer ideas, suggestions and feedback. The newsletter is really a great idea and since it is about RF members, each and everyone one of us should do our part to continually share our thoughts and talents towards it.
