Roseanne Barr and a plethora of others

You have to remember though that Europe is nowhere near monolithic. Each country and even part of a country has their own offensive things that are deemed normal.

I good example of this is Negerbollen pastries in Sweden, I will let you figure that one out, but those treats had that name until very recently.

Paul Mooney put it best, white people are more akin to apes, straight hair, white skin, thin lips, when you ever see a nappy haired ape nowhere that's where.

We used to have those in Finland too, I think they were named in the 19th century somewhere in central Europe and copied to other countries. Their names here were just quietly changed to Brunberg's kisses some years back when that word came to be seen as offensive, starting from the 90s.

For the record I'm not excusing her behavior which seems to be what people are thinking here. OP was more a slapstick way of saying not everyone's perfect, and I doubt the media firestorm that everyone seems to be jumping in on doesn't really know Roseanne, everyone is offended so easily these days, my last month long facebook ban was for calling American mass shooters savages (which subsequently led me to joining this forum). And the one before that, for mocking Hitler, and the one before that for posting an image of Tidepod Oreo cookie treats. Where did people's balls and ovaries go all of a sudden?

Speaking of overreactions, I remember when people crucified Joy Behar, because she had said that speaking with Jesus was a mental illness...

There is a culture of being obsessed with others in the US...

I would equate the American public to a toddler throwing a tantrum, they scream for awhile then forget and act like nothing ever happened.

It's the price you pay for utilizing social media as a ostensibly public figure. Fact is, if you don't want to have things you say haunt you for life or significantly affect your work life and public image, perhaps you should think carefully before comparing a black person to an ape and sharing that opinion with millions of people on social media.

Age isn't a defense for stupidity.
are you psychic?
Most moralists are psychic, I noticed.

As I see it. she is something like a queen of insult, in the tradition of Groucho Marx. You can not make such one-liners all the time and not cross the line of political correctness now and then. These are spontaneous associations. Did you ever notice some people do resemble more like apes than others? So that is a logical association. It is an insult, but that is her line of humor. No one believes it was directed at black people at large, except ... moralists.

She noticed she went over the line and apologized, that should have been enough. But then the Trump-haters saw this as a golden opportunity to stop her show. The way the left is trying to terrorize people with their morals is similar to the way the religious right is doing it. On both sides moralists and fundamentalists have taken over and have dug in deeply. It is now a trench war that will go on for ever. It gets more bitter all the time. We take no prisoners.

I'm 72. That racism was once 'normal' makes it no less racist and no less despicable.
I recall racism being just as wrong back in the day
(when Lincoln & I used to split rails together).
Since she's less than a year older than I am,
her age is neither excuse nor explanation.

Are you suggesting it takes a psychic to foresee that comparing a black woman to an ape would garner an extremely negative reaction from the public?

As I see it. she is something like a queen of insult, in the tradition of Groucho Marx. You can not make such one-liners all the time and not cross the line of political correctness now and then.
She is not a "queen of insult" and she did not write a "one-liner". She made a derisive comment about the appearance of a person that dredged up negative and offensive stereotypes and dehumanizing remarks made about black people in general in an attempt to demean a person she disagrees with politically, present them as subhuman, and most likely indicate racial inferiority. Stop pretending this was some incredibly witty banter - it's a scummy, unfunny comment made by a hack.

It was directed at a black person. Are you seriously going to tell me you see nothing at all racist about comparing a black person to an ape?

She noticed she went over the line and apologized, that should have been enough. But then the Trump-haters saw this as a golden opportunity to stop her show.
Trump-haters didn't stop her show, the show's producers did. They swiftly realized that looking like they are endorsing racists and outspoken bigots wasn't the best look for them, and decided Roseanne was thus a liability and threat to their image. As a professional comedian and public persona, Roseanne should have been well aware of this when she made the comment. Apology or not, her producers made the decision she was just too much of a liability given her current and past behaviour and axed her show. Whether that constitutes the right decision is a question you should ask them, not "Trump haters".

Conspiratorial nonsense.

A guy I once worked with (call him Bob) sat at a desk in front of a black guy (call him Sam).
One day, Bob was eating Brazil nuts.
He turned around to Sam, & asked....
"Hey, what do you guys call these things?".
A good laugh was had by all.

The game both sides play (or is it really the same side?)

They insulted me!
Lots of fake tears
Lots of dwelling in victimhood
Lost of nasty remarks to insult the other side to provoke them into retalliation

End result: bipartisan warfare

What's fake news about Roseanne's comment, and what does this have to do with politics?

Is what happens when you are allowed to get too old. Maybe she's a racist, maybe she just got too old and her ideas from her time are no longer acceptable. Or Duck dynasty dude, or the owner of the Clippers, or any too old people. You ever talk to your grandma or pa and suddenly think oh snap let's go back to talking about baking cookies or some benign topic. Because you are seeing what "normal" was for them. My grandfather would drop the N bomb every now and again. Which was a wtf moment for me, but now I realize, that was normal in his youth. That appalling language was in your everyday lexicon 65-80 years ago.

I'm not justifying it but no one seems to address the age here.
I'm not buying it. Society evolves quickly and if you consciously act to stay the same and promote those same norms, that's on you. Age does not excuse racism, sorry.

She's a comedian ...that tweet of hers was supposed to make people laugh.
Yeah, come on black people, you need to laugh when you're being demeaned, degraded, and dehumanized.

In life a bit of self-irony is necessary...also because we all descend from apes, after all

"N*gger" is derived from the word "negro", which is spanish for black, so no need to be offended anyone. Never mind the actual intention of the utterance.
