In late 2012, I met one of them in the body care section of a small health food store I worked in. Her name was Tammy. Our little interaction planted a seed that would sprout months later when she would work on me like no one has ever worked on me either before or since. ⠀

I didn’t know it at the time, but I was conversing with a bona fide shaman. ⠀

This woman could plumb the depths of your soul like no one I’ve ever known. She could travel inside you and tell you things you knew deeply about yourself but could never put words to. Tammy imparted some of the most instrumental and oftentimes counterintuitive wisdom I have ever come across, much of which directly explains my recovery over the following eight years.

It is scary having a mental illness. And I'm not just referring to dealing with mental health symptoms on a day-to-day basis. I was thinking of the social aspects of living with a mental illness and what it may mean in your life.

Many worry that potential or current relationship partners will end up rejecting them and they'll be lonely. Others are concerned parents or partners will die before they do and how will they cope with their mental illness without a caring person beside them.

But psychology by itself is not enough. When psychology lacks spirituality it is sterile, self-absorbed, and empty. Yes, we may become more functional members of society, but where is that depth, that zest, that deeper engagement with life?

Furthermore, at what point are we ever really “healed” of all our junk? Psychology is very much like a rabbit hole: the further you dig, the more there is to find. And the more psychological sewage you find, the more likely you are to begin pathologizing yourself, getting stuck within the stories created by the mind in an endless loop of doom. (And if you’re extra “lucky,” some kind of professional will do that for you, further reinforcing and legitimizing your mental misery!)

In this sense, psychology can become a poison and cure at the same time. On one hand, it points out all the ways in which we are “not good enough, emotionally stable enough, well-adjusted enough, healed enough” etc. etc. And on the other, it gives us all the tools to help us “get over” these pathologies (or give us the idea that we’re getting over them – until we use psychology to condemn ourselves again).

An explosion of research into self-compassion over the last decade has shown its benefits for well-being. Individuals who are more self-compassionate tend to have greater happiness, life satisfaction and motivation, better relationships and physical health, and less anxiety and depression. They also have the resilience needed to cope with stressful life events such as divorce, health crises, and academic failure, and even combat trauma.

The reason I (Kristin) really know self-compassion works, however, is because I’ve seen the benefits of it in my personal life. My son, Rowan, was diagnosed with autism in 2007, and it was the most challenging experience I had ever faced. I don’t know how I would have gotten through it if it weren’t for my self-compassion practice.

From an email - soul loss - esp the loner wolf site?

21 Signs You're Experiencing "Soul Loss" ⋆ LonerWolf

In our society, there is a mysterious phenomenon occurring known as “Soul Loss” arising in all people of all ages, genders, races, and backgrounds.

Indigenous people have known about the occurrence of Soul Loss for millennia, and understand it as the result of an inner fragmentation caused by a traumatic experience or an intense shock to the mind and body.

While for many of us Soul Loss sounds uncomfortably familiar, this experience is usually temporary, and with the proper inner work, these lost elements of ourselves can be reintegrated into our lives.

Realizing the emptiness of all things is a normal part of spiritual awakening. For some people that leads to serious depression and the feeling that life is pointless.

IF YOU FEEL STUCK in this painful nihilistic perspective, you are not alone.

I received a very poignant message from a reader who went to see a psychiatrist because her feelings of profound emptiness were causing her to feel depressed and listless. Everything that used to matter was suddenly empty, pointless. The more her sense of a separate self dissolved into oneness with the infinite, the more she was left feeling hollow and empty inside. Her doctor gave her medication, which blunted the extremes; she no longer feels the deepest lows, but the emptiness and hollowness are still present. And the more she is absorbed in oneness with what she calls God, the more everything else loses significance, the more pointless and meaningless everything else becomes. She feels alone in this experience, as though no one else who experiences spiritual awakening goes through this bleak depression.

Why I Stopped Chasing Money and What I Now Know About Happiness

The gift of life is a miracle. That you exist defies all odds—about 1 in 400 trillion, according to Google. While you let that sink in, know that your life also matters. Greatly. And whether you feel the magnitude of that statement yet is immaterial. One day it’ll tap you on the shoulder when you least expect it.

You were put on this earth to have an impact that only you can have. Because, there is no other you.

But what if I told you that vast potential could all be wiped away in one catastrophic, single-engine plane crash? You might say, “Nah, I don’t make it a habit of getting in those things!” Or that you’d soon find out you have an inoperable tumor that will rob you of the chance to see your daughter walk down the aisle next year? “Dude. I’m a vegetarian with no family history of Cancer, so stop with the Debbie Downer sh*t.”

Enjoy!
