How about God and science? All true science is from God which includes the vast majority of science. The only science I'm opposed to is the science of embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, and others that are harmful to the dignity of people. I am also opposed to science which allows animals to be unnecessarily harmed such as testing cosmetics on them for a reason which isn't for safety for people.

Well, I've lived several happy decades with no belief in any gods. Without science, I wouldn't be typing this and my husband would be dead. I'm gonna have to go with science.

I love this notion that all true science comes from God. It seems pretty clear to me that both come from the human mind, and one is currently saving the quality of my life, while the other's existence has, if anything, lowered it. I wish I could go back and take all the wasted thoughts about God, and replace them with study in science and philosophy.

Yeah, they've got all the bases covered that way. Really, though, if millions or billions of people make it through life just fine with no belief in god, it's silly to assume belief has any significant benefit at all, let alone enough to compare favorably with, for example, penicillin.

Like Christine stated, both have different benefits.

But considering how you said "humankind" I voted science.

If you were to say "an individual human" I'd have voted God.

Exactly. And of course, like you pointed out earlier, to mess with C.S. Lewis, it's impossible to talk about the benefits of God over science via a platform supported by science and not God. If arguing against God is equivalent to cutting the branch one sits on, talking about how great God is over science via a computer is equivalent to burning the entire tree.

I found it incredibly distasteful to credit God with the tons of sacrifice individuals have put in, which actually forms the foundation of scientific knowledge, not God.

And without God, there's wouldn't be anybody in front of you to proclaim all this. :D
