Should Government Forgive Home Loans?

To describe an education system with the
single word "free", doesn't address the
problems created when it's given away
with no perceived cost.
Someone must pay, & there is pressure
to keep costs down. "Free" doesn't tell
us about the problems that we know
will arise.

Therefore absolutely nothing is free

Don't we admire past civilizations for their greatness in areas like philosophy (uselesss?), art (useless?), and literature (useless?)? I'm not sure I agree with your characterization of these fields as useless to a civilization.
I'm reminded of Vroomfondel, Majikthise, &
the Philosophers Union. Their desperate
arguments to justify their very existence
amused us all. A common question in
academia...
Is philosophy dead?
It's useful, but isn't a field appropriate for
advanced study, or productive in research.
It's settled, unlike STEM fields.

Let people study "hobby" fields. But they
shouldn't be subsidized to the extent of
useful fields, eg, medicine, engineering.

Resource allocation is always
the most important issue.

I'm reminded of something my
youngest sister ("Rat") once said
when my father said he couldn't
afford to buy something...
"Write a check"
That's the Democrat & Republican
answer to anything they really
desire.

Yah, that wouldn't work. Honestly, we are too far gone for anything like that to actually happen - especially with how divided the nation is and continues to become. Not only that, but because of the way states are structured, a full on lockstep approach these kinds of changes would require would seem impossible. That's something that would be much easier for a nation that isn't comprised of mini-nations like the USA is

Besides, the student cost issue won't be fixed for the same reason why the rising disparity between cost of living and income and the astronomical medical bills that continue to grow will never be addressed In a meaningful way. If those with money and power exploit the average person as much as possible, we won't care or notice as long as we are arguing with eachother over tertiary cultural issues such as "wokeness" that those same people in power present to us

Why would those who run this nation want to seriously help the average person to become educated and become critical thinkers who might actually come to realize what's happening? A dumb population who don't ask too many questions are perfectly happy to live complacently paycheck to paycheck and are easily distracted. The machine's functioning as intended
I won't comment on the rest, your conspiracy
theory stuff.
On chicago etc of course it would not wotk.
That was my point.

ffff

Fact of life...
Things with no perceived cost tend to be wasted.

Do you have an off switch?

I see it as providing free education to a certain level.
Thereafter, the individual pays. This would be
especially so for "hobby" fields, eg, art, philosophy,
which won't provide earning power to justify the
cost to taxpayers.

This is the second time you've mentioned majors you didn't think were valuable. What if free classes only applied to people going for STEM majors? Would you be ok with it then?

Those people should've considered the wisdom of
borrowing so much money when they had so little
earning potential to pay it back.
If their education isn't worth as much as they paid,
then they should've learned plumbing.

The expectation in today's society is that you pay now for education that gives you more money that you can pay back later. Sure, you can dismiss that, but this is the way society works right now if you want an education and daddy dearest can't pay for it. Sucks to suck, but this is what it has become

I still don't favor free higher education.
If paid for by the student, it will be treated
with greater value.
There are ways to subsidize some students by
those who see this worthwhile, eg, scholarships,
waiving tuition
BTW, in MI, Indians pay no tuition at
universities. This likely relates to the state &
university being on land stolen from them.

I don't dismiss it.
Instead, I advise not borrowing money
that you likely won't be able to repay.

If society says borrow massively without regard
to repayment, then society should change to
encourage greater personal responsibility.

It students don't benefit financially enuf to pay the
taxes cover the cost of their education, then this
imposes a burden upon the rest of society.

No link needed to contrast modern liberals vs classical liberals.
The former...
More economic regulation, bigger government,
more speech regulation, more of a police state,
more foreign adventurism (ie, policing the world),
massive intrusive social programs, group identity
tends to supersede individual rights.

The latter....
Smaller government, less regulation, more free
speech, minding our own business around the
world, supremacy of the individual.
Modern liberals oppose free speech, promote a police state and support foreign adventurism?! Why does this sound bass-ackward?
These have always been associated with the far Right, not the Left. They're strongly opposed by the liberal Left.

That's how far the Overton window has shifted.

Selflessly here for you
What of the quality of a "free" education?

How limited is availability?

The left chants "Free university education!",
but how is payment for it vs resource
allocation handled? Are taxes raised?
Quality wise, one should always do some research -both about the school itself and about its reputation within your field of interest- before choosing where to apply.

Standards for higher education are set by government. These must be met, or your studies will not qualify for funding. You can still choose such education but you’ll need to finance it yourself.

In Europe, standards required for colleges are different to those for universities. Those for universities are academically higher, but your choice between college or university, depends on what you intend to do with your qualifications.

Availability and competition obviously vary widely depending on the popularity of field and school at the time of your application.

In Sweden, in the mid 90s, so many youngsters wanted to do hairdressing at a certain college on the West coast, that those who actually got admitted, had similar scores to those who entered into medicine (!)

Can one get a PhD in a useless field at
great expense to the school & taxpayers?
See above! Though colleges don’t offer PhD’s, so no PhD’s in hairdressing.

And about taxes: income tax in Sweden for example, is high, but includes everything from council tax to tv-license fees, so broken down; taxes are lower there than in the U.K. where income tax is deducted from your pay and you are billed separately for all sort of other taxes!

Humbly,
Hermit

Perhaps you believe that because modern conservatives
pursue that agenda, it means that modern liberals don't.
The problem is that both do.

The modern liberal isn't so liberal in the sense of being
permissive & tolerant. Speech codes, sending USA to
war, civil forfeiture abuse, etc, etc....you'll find Dems in
the presidency & Congress cooperating with Pubs to
commit these many wrongs.
Doing some progressive things (belatedly) doesn't
eliminate the wicked things they've done.

To those who believe government should forgive
student loans, I ask about loans for home owners.
Answer & reasons please.
With the understanding that education is free from kinder to 12th grade and, in many cases, free through 2 years of college. With the knowledge that there are Pell grants as well as many other discounts for grades, national origin, gender, race and many more.

Student loans should not be forgiven and home loans should not be forgiven either.

That being said, the question that I feel should be asked is why is college education so expensive.
