Should porn sites require IDs

Might be where I live then. We do require in NC to be IDed for porn sites. They use face scanning software and third party apps as well as allow you to take a photo of ID.

Yikes. That sounds like a data breach waiting to happen.

How do they police this for sites not hosted in North Carolina?

I don't know. Pornhub is blocked in NC completely. But according to the law it's illegal for the porn site to keep the info. The tech just scans the photo of ID if used for age and thats it. Most just use the face software and don't take a photo of the ID. Or they use a third party app.

I don't know how secure it is. I know there's ways to make sure it's secure but I doubt sites had time before the law was in effect to make sure it was.

Should porn sites require IDs so kids wont use them? I think they should but not now. There needs to be time to fix technical issues so it would be safe to have ID checks done privacy concerns. I know only a few states in the US require IDs maybe other countries have implemented them as a requirement and have solved those privacy issues?
It is the duty of parents to not let kids see porn

Not the duty of the state

What if there was a third party that verified it then stated to the site that the person is of age? Like a bank?
Third party verification isn't free. Someone would have to pay for it. Who do you suggest does this?

Here's the thing...I'm not sure most parents intentionally allow their kids to access porn. Even ones that watch kids like hawks kids still access it. But young children do access it. In large amounts. Just checking a box of yes I'm over 18 isn't enough to verify someone is of age. It just isn't. Like I said it's similar to alcohol buying it online and it being restricted to people old enough to drink rather then allowing kids to buy it.
You have to show ID to buy a porn magazine in retail establishments.

Many parents have alcohol in their home. Should the government install third party ID verification on people's refrigerators and liquor cabinets to prevent those under 21 from accessing them?

This what pops up when I go to access porn hub:

You trust either of them?
I don't.
No I don't trust porn sites. I think the whole industry needs a haul and to be redone. But I also don't trust most parents to moniter their kids. And I feel if a penalty is high enough then porn sites would follow the law.

Still, it should be the parents' responsibility,
rather than government's. When parents
fail, the deleterious consequences are more
limited than when government fails.

This is the same argument as to sex education in schools, and where many parents for various reasons will try to opt out, but where they then place their children in a possibly more vulnerable position - lacking essential knowledge. These days it is just not possible to monitor all that any child has as influences, especially when children do tend to get much of their information from their peers - apart from the few who have no friends.

Either way guys NC other states and some European countries are requiring Identification. We will see the consequences of it good and/or bad. I see both cons and pros to this. I do think we need some way to verify ages of people viewing porn online. It is really damaging to young kids. Particularly ones younger then 10. This damage is likely to cost taxpayers money helping these kids as adults with therapy and other things. But I also think such sites need an overhaul in general the whole industry and I think that there needs to be more time when implementing such laws and testing regarding security.

So this could go badly. Real badly. But also could go very well and prevent a lot of kids from trauma.

There's also the fact it doesnt solve the problem with the existence of VPNs. So parents need to watch kids regardless.

No.
Would you trust government to have this info?
A more pressing question would imo rather be: would you trust the owners (and partners?) of these websites with your info?
Those owners at some point will likely sell their website also, along with that information.

And let's not even mention what potentially happens when hackers get a hold of that data.

Any who say that such IDs cannot be done. Do you use and trust online banking?
Online banking doesn't require my ID. It requires my credit / debet card.

Having said that, media / porn sites don't have the incentive of banks to secure their sites like banks do.
Banking activity also is very much under much stricter control by law then media channels.

So the comparison is flawed to begin with imo.

Even if the website owner isn't malicious themselves, I don't trust some random website owner to have super-robust cybersecurity measures.

If that sort of site were targetted in a ransomware attack, say, what would they be expected to do? It's not like there would really be a hit to their bottom line if a database of user age verification data were breached.

I don't see much incentive for them to keep the data secure except for what the law requires, but "what the law requires" doesn't matter much unless there's enforcement behind it.

I use and trust online banking mostly because of the legal framework that banks work under. Also, there are national insurance programs for banks and security policies for credit cards so that if hackers steal money from my account or make fraudulent charges to my credit card, I'm not on the hook.

How could someone ever expect a random porn site operating in an unknown country would comply with standards as high as the ones that Canadian banks have to follow?

I would think that simple age verification could be arranged - some kind of one-way encryption algorithm - such that no other data was tied to an identity. Doesn't seem that complicated to me at least - and a bit like encrypted currencies perhaps.

But it's only about age verification. Surely this isn't that hard. Discarded data and all, etc.

Encryption of what, though? Proof of age documents vary greatly around the world.
