Don't worry you are not alone :)

I hate it as well, it's always the same and never any interesting answers... "How are you? Fine and you?", "How's it going a work? You know busy, a lot to do.....blah blah blah"....
Me heading for the beers!! :D

Which people? I haven't met them.

Most people are either apathetic to religion or don't want to hear anything outside their tightly held beliefs.

The other day, a neighbor walked up to me with her phone, clearly excited about a video she saw and wanted to share. She opened with, "I don't know what your politics are, but..."

I replied kindly, "And you won't. Two things that rarely make for productive discussion [between neighbors] are politics and religion."

She enthusiastically replied, "I'm a born again Christian, and I'll shout it from the rooftops!"

I smiled and responded, "Good for you!"

I saw nothing productive from pursuing the topic from there.
P.S. I have some very nice neighbors, we talk but not about religion in general. When I go to my religious meetings, it's all about the Bible and understanding it.

You are not alone when it comes to this. Religion, philosophy, and spirituality are the main interests of some of us, but everybody around us is not very interested in those topics. If you and I were living in the same area, I’d gladly talk about religion, philosophy, and spirituality with you. :)

I'm not usually too good at small talk. So I find myself often talking about the weather. I always thought that'd be a silly thing to do when I was a kid but it turns out it is fairly safe.

Let’s talk about the weather in Śivaloka and Goloka. The weather in Sukhāvatī might also be interesting. :p

It would make a great social club! My creative writing group provided this type of forum for me for years, but unfortunately people have moved on and is no longer as diverse in thought. I miss that very much.

I note that "we only smalltalk about ..." is plural. Would you mind letting us know:
  • Do you occasionally seek to initiate discussions about religion, philosophy and spirituality?
  • If so, how did you go about doing so?
  • How were your efforts received, and to what would you attribute this response?

How might we (better) help?

I actively hated "small talk" when I was younger. It felt pointless, devoid of substance, a dodge of discussing things of actual gravity and importance.

I still feel that way about it, somewhat, but I've also learned that "small talk" isn't about the talk at all. It is about taking moments of your finite life span and spending it with someone, just talking. That in of itself is a gift given and a blessing taken.

Small talk is boring but convenient if you want to keep your friends. On another take, always talking about religion, philosophy and spirituality leads to boredom as well as spurring discontent. I have taken many breaks from Religious Forums because I tire of the same rethread of religion, philosophy and spirituality. Can't wait until someone new comes out in one of those fields, the next messiah, or great philosopher or even a world wide spiritual leader. Just can't get into the 1000-year-old prophets, philosophers and spiritualists. Even some of the 100-year-old philosophers and spiritualists are wearing thin.
