Software Feedback Thread

For the last few days I was getting an "Oops" page when accessing Religious Forums . The first day accessing the site after software change was logged out with "Oops" page and for the next days "Oops" while logged in. I got to the forums by clicking on my profile name and than Your content and than later by clicking Forums.

This is the first time after software change that I have not got an "Oops" page accessing home URL and everything appears to be working correctly. Yesterday I was looking for a thread to report the issue and didn't see this one.

RF does appear to be behaving much better since the change.
When will staff be upgraded?
(The uniforms are getting ragged & smelly.)

A lot of pictures are missing, the RF colour scheme and the difficulty finding new threads are the only niggles i can find (at the moment). It's certainly more responsive, no hang ups etc.

And all the staff need is a good hosing down before putting them back in their box

And de-lousing them.

No change in brokenness - three in one - no indication who I quoted, no updates from watched threads and highlighting is basically invisible. Also, still no in page list of new threads. Of course email is broken. Also attach images is broken. My disgust and cynicism is being proven correct.
I mentioned this previously. If you click the link in the red circle, you will see both read and unread.

You've just not learned how to use it yet.
Read thru the thread for tips.
Even this aging codger is coping.
Old dogs must learn new trix.
And look at the speed...it's blazingly fast compared to a week ago.

If you would read through the issues (and solutions) instead of complaining incessantly about what's broken, you'd find that you actually do have an indication of who you quoted, that in the RF style UI, its in such a light gray color, it's hardly visible. Switching to the default theme is the work-around until it's fixed.

The new threads widget has been brought to the owners' attention and is being worked on. Same with the images from the previous version.

You have been told that the upgrade is not yet complete...that it is ongoing.

Flaunting your "disgust and cynicism" does nothing but show lack of patience. Sorry this isn't happening fast enough for your liking.

All of us, including staff, are reporting issues and expressing our preferred features to the owners. You could use this thread and other feedback threads to do the same and contribute to forum improvement.

The email issue was one of the main reasons for the update. It is being worked on but needs more time than other issues due to how complex it is.

Will this include a fix for receiving email notifications when someone replies to a thread one is posting in?

The email issue both for alerts and verification is being worked on. It is expected to take longer than most other issues because the solution to it involves more steps, but it was one of the main reasons for the update and is definitely a priority.

Will anything be done to improve contrast?

Design elements are on the list of planned changes, but some features and issues have more priority, such as reinstatement of the "New Threads" list and fixing email alerts and verification.

The light-gray & lighter-gray used to show highlighting,
pages, posters, etc, are barely distinguishable.
Me peepers ain't what they once were.

The owners are aware of the issues with the current color scheme.

The quote function behaves very differently.
I've not figured out how to use it correctly.
Any info about how it works?

There are two ways to handle quotes: in code view, which comes up when you click the square-bracket icon, and in the "rich text" editor, which I'm using as I type this.

In the code editor, use [quote ] *text here* [/ quote] (without spaces) to delineate a section of a quoted post or material.

In the rich text editor, simply place your cursor at the end of a quoted line and start a new paragraph/line. The software will automatically separate your own response from the quoted material.

Any chance that you have either preview or text rich editor toggled on?
This happens when you go into preview mode by clicking the magnifying-glass icon on the right side of the editor toolbar. Click it again and you will get out of preview mode, enabling the buttons again.
Yay! It was in RTF mode. Many thanks!

Its difficult to deal with change at times, and I'm struggling, too. But, getting one's fur ruffled over it doesn't speed things along. The people that can are doing what they can to get things fixed. This may take awhile. Technology was made to malfunction. None of us are pleased about what's broken or missing, but we're all trying to enjoy our time the best we can, in spite of any set backs. It seems to me all things are temporary, including comfortable software(which outdates), and technical issues(which get resolved).

Besides, you dogs can lift leg and pee where ever you want. Have you seen the chaos that hit the RF restrooms? @Revoltingest has his work cut out for him for the next several weeks...

I know you mods are getting buried with feedback, and I appreciate what you're going through, you have my thanks.

There are a couple of books that I think cover the waterfront well when it comes to making things (like web forums), as usable as possible. The first is called "The Design of Everyday Things". The second is "Efficiency in Learning".

The old version of the site actually set a pretty high bar when it comes to usability. It was better in terms of navigability AND in terms of maximizing the display of information. A couple of general rules of thumb that might help:

- The use of "modes" hurts usability. I notice many places now where you can hover over a screen element and get extra info. While that's better than nothing, it's much harder to use than if more info was on display at all times.

- Scrolling hurts usability. The less a user has to scroll, the better. The new format tends to use more vertical screen space when it presents lists. The more space each element takes, the fewer elements you can see without having to scroll.

Again, if you want to have a more detailed discussion, I'm happy to participate. But I'm guessing you're already feeling overwhelmed. Good luck!
