For what it's worth, I continue to believe that the "OMG there are so many starts there must be intelligent life" is naive.

the Drake equation is plenty enough and far more then naive.

The evidence that we are here is also evidence we could not be alone.

thinking we are alone is naive

like I said its naive to think we are alone.

There are as many suns in the known universe as there are grains of sands in all the beaches of the earth.

By the drake equation, it is impossible that we are alone.

I have a blog post where I examine each of the variables in the Drake equation. Reptoavian's Blog: Alien Contact Forthcoming? I tend to be more of a "Rare Earth Hypothesis" fan, but ultimately the existence of aliens and study of life in the universe lies within the scope of science...so lets stop hypothesizing and look for it. :) Hawking worries too much and is prone to speculation.

I think that life is a fundamental process in the universe. Given the right conditions, it will arise. I can't imagine that such conditions are unique to our little planet.

And once life exists in primitive form, evolution is inevitable. Eyes and ears and locomotive powers all contribute to survival. I think that intelligence is also inevitable, although I'd guess that self-conscious intelligence is rare. It requires appendages capable of manipulating tools, I think. Obviously it requires language.

If there's not life out there, it would so astoundingly violate my sense of things that it might even make me believe in a God who considers Earth somehow special.

we are to primitive to do anything but guess at this point in time

If we can measure the light spectra from exoplanets using space based telescopes, we might be able to determine their atmospheric composition. The abundance of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere is kind of a dead givaway to any observer that there is something unusual going on here chemically...perhaps even an indicator of life. Oxygen in an alien planet's atmosphere would tell us that there is very likely some form of life with a similar biochemistry to Earth's there. Hawking doesn't seem to realize that aliens probably would know we are here already just by observing our Sun and solar system from the comfort of their own world. Its also likely that life and intelligence are very broad universal phenomena and that once we know what to look for we'll see them everywhere and in unexpected places. I think its likely we'll create intelligent "alien" life here on Earth (either machine or through genetic engineering) before encountering it in the cosmos.
